Rabbi Cohen's Statement
February 2, 2014 10:43 pm

According to the article, Rabbi Cohen referred to the founder as a “poreik ol”. The Gemarra in Yuma, 85b, states that a poreik ol is one of the categories for which there is no tshuva. Furthermore, Rashi comments that a poreik ol is a kofer b’ Hakados Baruch Hu—a denier of the Holy One Blessed Be He. In addition, the Gemarra states that someone who leads others to sin is also denied tshuva. Certainly, influencing people to curse the parents, something that is clearly done by the founder and his trainees, falls into this category. This man and his program… Read more »

you need to understand that we are not trying to hurt anybody but we are trying to protect ourselves! the damage done by a speaker who has gone AND STILL BELIEVES THIS IS HIS SALVATION IN LIFE should be exposed in order to protect the public, or the children of such a teacher from being taught views that are heretical to our values! we are not upset at them for going! but if they are still trapped and confused, they dont belong in those positions- for the safety of the community! the minute they ‘GET IT’ . they are welcome… Read more »

I want to thank all the commenters who voiced support of the united efforts to expose this group’s deception and danger. There have been attempts by group members to intimidate and suppress information. Your vocal support has given me and many others the koach needed to persevere. I urge anyone who feels confused or pained by what they’ve been through with this group to reach out to Rabbonim and experts. If you feel that you experienced a unique “high” at shofar that you wont find again, know that it was an engineered, manipulated high, with short-term effects. Rest assured that… Read more »

There are Victims and There are Victims
February 2, 2014 8:45 am

Anyone who went innocently is certainly a victim. Those in the inner circle are also victims. Even the founder is a victim; a victim of himself. But he and his sickness still must be purged from klall Yisroel. Ohavei Hashem Sinu Rah.

You reiterate an important point. Attendees went innocently. The problem lies with the people more deeply ensnared. This group targeted, preyed upon vulnerability– to be human is to be vulnerable. There s much to say on this subject.

listen up
February 1, 2014 10:23 pm

Thank you Robin, thank you to the rabbis who have put their time into understanding, deep gratitude for the attendees who will look deeply within and determine how to do teshuva and release the binds of the brainwashing, thank you to the psychologist and staff who wrote a clear synapsos on Cots and deep appreciation to the readers who will lovingly and respectfully help those who have been exposed to COTS.

STOP THE WITCH HUNT
February 1, 2014 9:04 pm

As much as COTS had a problem with Lashon Hara, it seems that some of us are committing the same evil while trying to find the “sinners” who participated in COTS. The people who went there are innocent, since they went assuming that all was kosher. Those that are calling on a “with hunt” are committing Sinas Chinom.

January 31, 2014 12:21 pm

Your powerful, eloquently expressed comments touch upon a critical matter. 83’s comment– “The violations of halacha, even the very foundations of Yiddishkeit, just on this one point are beyond comment” — hits at the very core of this pernicious leader and his insidious psychological techniques. Unfortunately, even though the problem has been exposed to some degree, the impact and ramifications are FAR from over. We must unite, and compassionately reach out to our brothers and sisters who have been infected. As a community, it is imperative that we have professional assistance with much needed intervention and recovery process. 83’s comment… Read more »

they are taken over by this tuma to a deep level sincerely believing this has been good for them.
they are so lost its scary to talk to them- brainwashed totally!
we need to daven and try to help them but otherwise if they dont come-around they should be publicized and removed from position for the sole reason that they try to spread this poison to others esp. those who dont know the sources .

Keep in mind that COTS exercises did not just violate inyanei loshon hara and rechilius, but kibbud av v’eim as well, and EGGREGIOUSLY! This man, the founder, made it part of his shita to explode even the smallest complaint (real or imagined, it didn’t matter) someone may have had against their mother or father. “Breath into the pain,” “Scream like (deleted) animal!” he would repeatedly yell at his victim, until his face “turned purple” with rage. Lashon Hara can ruin lives
January 30, 2014 10:45 pm

We are dealing with info that can ruin lives. When a son tells about the cruelty of his father etc., that may jeopardize the job, honor, communal position etc. of the father. It may harm the family for shiduchim etc. Disgrace the grandchildren etc. Besides, And it may be the subjective feelings of the son, exaggerating the father’s faults. Rabbi Winner said that if you can accomplish this through a private therapy, then group therapy of this sort would be Lashon Hara. Ultimately, a Rav should decide on each individual case how to handle this issue. People who went to… Read more »

throughout history we have seen new fangled ideas: snake oil, miracle creams, etc offered and gobbled up by the sheeple – foods that were considered harmful are now considered beneficial.. on and on this story goes. Torah is the ONE everlasting and unchanging constant that we have available to us for FREE!!!
and it can’t get used up either…………. To all those who keep spouting that the nay sayers are the “old” and the “young and smart” are introducing life saving fabulous ideas – I am sad for you. This is the talk of the founders of the reform movement.

Rabbi Twersky does not consider himself as a Posek. He encouraged and attended the hearing with Rav Dovid Cohen who paskened that based on the Psak of R. Moshe Feinstein Z”L that one should not go to this program. Rabbi Osdoba will publish a comprehensive psak din shortly. As far as we know he will certainly not endorse going to COTS.

January 30, 2014 2:07 pm

rabbi twerski is a psychologist, not a posek, which is why he went to hear dayan cohens psak and accept from him the din.

i dont know why others arent paskening- it seems they have close ones that went although i dont see why thats a reason not to pasken if one is rav in a community.

You have tremendous guts may G-d bless you in every way.

I think our job now is simple. Make sure no more workshops (damage) occurs.

And then go one by one or maybe in a group to eliminate the treif ideology they absorbed.

Twerski
January 30, 2014 2:05 pm

Twerski is in an uncomfortable position. His brother gave a haskama to COTS, which is pretty shameful, if you ask me. ANY statement by A Twerski would be either harmful to his brother or shredded by the public, depending on the statement. One would hope he has more integrity than that.

Rabbi Cohen's decision is limited
January 30, 2014 1:44 pm

From what I can tell Rabbi Cohen did not say COTS is a cult or sourced from loshon hora. He only stated that Frishling or anyone who studied under him cannot run the seminars.

re: your comment Where you say “well used and very effective” maybe this too should be examined? You are making a statement as though “well used..” makes it okay and kosher. I personally have not gone to Call of the Shofar and for the past while I have just been watching, hearing, and reading much of the reactions and responses, like many others in the community. I think one of the biggest issues is when things are mixed up. For example the problem that we should find everything in Chassidus, in my opinion, should not be mixed in with an issue of this program being Avodah Zarah or harmful to people. You have stated very articulately what many of us are worried about.

We have all developed a liking to different speakers and lecturers in our communities and over the web that we thought give us wisdom and inspiration. But now that a number of these high ranking speakers and lecturers have gone to these retreats and adopted thier perspectives and ideas, they use it as a frame work and structure for developing thier classes.

How can one detect if what the speaker or lecturer is saying is based on chassidus or lihavidl cots or others like it?
