Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) was shocked and utterly appalled after the White House released a statement on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, omitting Jews from the text of the statement Friday afternoon.
“It is utterly horrendous and unconscionable for President Trump and his administration to omit Jews from the text of his statement when talking about International Holocaust Remembrance Day,” Assemblyman Hikind said. “The Holocaust was undoubtedly a systematic attempt to annihilate the Jewish people, and the failure to acknowledge that is a desecration of their memory.”
Hikind added: “As a child of Holocaust survivors whose parents and grandparents went to Auschwitz, and as a representative of the largest population of Holocaust survivors in the U.S., it is egregious and a slap in the face to the millions of Jews whose lives were forever changed as a result of the Holocaust.”
The White House’s full statement reads:
“It is with a heavy heart and somber mind that we remember and honor the victims, survivors, heroes of the Holocaust. It is impossible to fully fathom the depravity and horror inflicted on innocent people by Nazi terror.
“Yet, we know that in the darkest hours of humanity, light shines the brightest. As we remember those who died, we are deeply grateful to those who risked their lives to save the innocent.
“In the name of the perished, I pledge to do everything in my power throughout my Presidency, and my life, to ensure that the forces of evil never again defeat the powers of good. Together, we will make love and tolerance prevalent throughout the world.”
The statement didn’t mention Jews or anti-Semitism because “despite what the media reports, we are an incredibly inclusive group and we took into account all of those who suffered,” administration spokeswoman Hope Hicks told CNN.
Asked if the White House was suggesting President Donald Trump didn’t mention Jews as victims of the Holocaust because he didn’t want to offend the other people the Nazis targeted and killed, Hicks replied, “it was our honor to issue a statement in remembrance of this important day.”
The presidential reference to the “innocent people” victimized by the Nazis without a mention of Jews or anti-Semitism by the White House on International Holocaust Remembrance Day was a stark contrast to statements by former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama.
Assemblyman Hikind suggested that while President Trump and his administration has been a good friend to Israel, the White House should issue a formal apology for excluding Jews when talking about Holocaust Remembrance Day. “This sets a terrible precedent and is so utterly disrespectful to the millions affected. It is my hope that President Trump acknowledges this horrible mistake and issues an apology to the Jewish community.”
Hinkind is a political hack of the left, he like his fellow travellers are still smarting from their November defeat.
Our population is horrifically IGNORANT of the Holocaust. To see these comments any survivor or chid of survivors would just simply faint! WORDS ARE IMPORTANT. Those that want to deny the Holocaust always say it wasn’t just the JEws. But every educator knows that the Holocaust was SPECIFICALLY Jewish!!! The fallout from this will encourage the deniers – it’s already started! PLEASE do something about this terrible, terrible ignorance! Considering all that our kids learn in s chool, perhaps knowing about the Holocaust is at least as important as knowing the details of our rebbeim’s life!! Please educate Jewish children… Read more »
Exactly. After the UN vote Hikind said he was ashamed to be a Democrat, he called Obama a “hero to the terrorists” and said he had “eclipsed Carter for worst record on Israel.”
He is no socialist and he was not a supporter of Obama but even he can see that this is Holocaust denial from the White House.
These ppl don’t represent me, start complaining about something important please
I don’t see the Jews being “excluded” .
Mr hikend please get a life and stop complaining about nothing.
You guys bashing Dov Hikind do realize he endorsed McCain and Romney over Obama despite being a Democrat, don’t you? Hikind frequently criticized Obama when it came to Israel and Iran.
TRUMP.
Where was hikind when Obama abstained the vote condemning Israel in the UN???? Where was Hikind when Obama made his final act in office giving 22 million of American tax dollars to the PA????? It’s not like President Trhmp mentioned other religions or races. Yes it would’ve been nice to mention the Jews and they was poorly executed but it’s such a small thing compared o the rings obama did at the end of his presidency it’s being so so so overblown by the left. It’s a little pathetic that our politics our so partisan and so politicized that Hikind… Read more »
I too, voted for Trump. But even though I agree with a lot of his policies, when he does something wrong, he must be called out for it. Not to mention the Jews on Holocaust Remembrance Day is just wrong!
If President Trump was a Democrat, Hikind would not have anything to say about this matter
Without goal in mind
Why try and put down a “president” that is focusing on helping Jews and catch him on an insensitivity?
Just because he is trump and he supports Israel, doesn’t mean he can get away with this. I couldn’t care less what would happen to obama if he would say this… or what trump does… this is not ok.
Even though many perished, the “final solution” was made by the nazis YM”S to deal with the “Jewish problem”, to say otherwise is whitewashing history and a blatant lie!
This is holocaust denial rhetoric!
things are going to be fine this issue does not really matter
don’t get distracted by this.
it doesn’t matter, focus on
PRESSURING RELEASE OF RUBASHKIN,
MOVING EMBASSY,
SCHOOL VOUCHERS
practical things that can help the Jewish people.
Give me a break. please people, stop nitpicking everything the President says or doesn’t say, especially in this case. He has a lot of Jewish people working under him, in particular his own daughter and son in law! He’s far from an anti semite like Obama is and he’s the best friend Israel can have from a President in the United States. Jews weren’t the only ones murdered in the Holocaust. There were Gypsies, Gays, Priests, handicapped, etc. Get over it Liberals!
Israel & anti-Jewish remarks etc.? Don’t quite understand him.
#14, – well said. If it would have specifically mentioned Jews, the media would have slammed him for being overly pro-Jews. As we have seen, whatever Trump does is attacked..
Of course! We know Trumps intentions to Jews and Israel and they are amazing! Obama’s actions have been anti Jewish anti Semitic and anti Israel
So while trump has done so so much for Jews and Israel- this choice of wording is stupid to fight over, however obama’s actions have been deplorable
Let’s have this goy Trump hate remembering Holocaust.
Ask him why maybe? What was Trump’s reaction to the apology-requesting letter?
It is not just the statement it is that the response from the White House was that “Everyone suffered in the Holocaust, including the Jewish people.”
This is not true, everyone did not suffer equally!
Today Sean Spicer said “the president has been praised” for the statement but the only praise I have heard has come from The Daily Stormer and other Neo-Nazis!
this was the first time i saw the actual full text of his statement and i have to say I really think people are looking to make ‘something out of nothing”. Had he metioned other races or nationalities ( or for that matter even given some attention to the types of victims and their sudffering) it couldve been considered a deliberate oversight but as it it seems, most of the statement is vague and seems not to mention much of the suffering choosing to focus much more on the positive aspects and joy of moving forward which I must say… Read more »
Why try and put down a “president” that is focusing on helping Jews and catch him on an insensitivity?
Yeah when your favorite president sent 200+million dollars to PA thats bc hes for the jewz, rt?
BS”D # 5 you are a sick demented, angry individual, do you know what it means to call someone who never killed a Soul a nazi who killed 6 million of them, where is the comparison, you demean the 6 million, typical left statement, go read what your brethren went through
@3: I think you are uneducated with the Rebbes approach to the holocaust. The Rebbe cried about it. It was the farthest thing from being ignored. On the other hand, rather then to blame the Jews doing avieros as a cause for the holocaust (and many gedolim tried to do) the Rebbe clearly said that we cannot understand the reason for it etc. that has nothing to do with his caring about the 6 million who were killed.
@8: right on! I don’t think Trump was “out to get the Jews” with what he put out.
This and almost everything else Trump has so far done is about playing to his base.
Not sure where Chabad and CH will fit into Trumps agenda but im sure those who voted for him are holding their breath waiting to find out. Not me.
Trump is obviously pro jews stop making a big deal out of nothing
Reince Priebus said the statement did not mention Jews because “Everyone suffered in the Holocaust, including the Jewish people”. This is what the Holocaust deniers say, they say that it was not an attempt by the Nazis to destroy the Jewish people but instead it was something that ‘everyone’ suffered from equally. Lies!
The Neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer praised President Trump for “pushing back against Jewish supremacy”. Disgusting!
It goes without saying that jews are included in a statement regarding the Holocaust.
All these people defending Trump for this would have been outraged had this been Obama
these tzadikim when they took the jewish off the holocaust museum
it was supposed to be called the jewish holocaust museum
I PROMISE you, if this were a president who was a democrat, all of you would be screaming Anti-semitism. Yet again when the Trump administration does it it isn’t a big deal.
STEVE. BANON. LITERALLY A NAZI.
I agree with #2.
Dear Mr. Hikind ‘relax.’
sometimes I feel like the 7th lubav rebbe did not address the Jewish Holocaust in a direct way. and I have tried to come up with answers why. people asked him about the holocaust, a common type of answer is/was that it is not understood, etc., but for the size of it, one third of total jewish population wiped out, and larger percent of Chassidic jews – you would think there would be reams of speeches about it. so, in a sense, the white house statement (or lack of) is sort of consistent with the 7th rebbe
I don’t see the big deal here
Hikind doesn’t represent the Jewish people either he is a democratic representing the democratic party which many compare to socialism
