R’ Aviv ben Mosher Halevi Stein, who served in the U.S. Air Force before reconnecting with his Jewish heritage inspired by the Rebbe, passed away on Tuesday, 13 Iyar 5777.
He was 65.
Born on a kibbutz collective community in Israel in 1952, Stein grew up in a secular environment. He moved to the United States in 1964 and enlisted in the air force.
He was one of the 303,644 soldiers wounded in Vietnam War that pitted the communist government of North Vietnam against South Vietnam and its principal ally, the United States.
Upon his return, he settled in Texas and met his wife Abigail. It was there that he also met Rabbi Shimon Lazaroff who arrived in Houston in 1972 as a Shliach of the Rebbe to connect with local Jews.
Under the guidance of Rabbi Lazaroff, Aviv Stein began his journey on learning about Jewish tradition and eventually adapting an observant Jewish life according to Torah and Mitzvos.
Seeking a more frum environment for their growing family, the Steins moved to the Crown Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY. Aviv went to daven at Frankel Shul on President Street and merited to receive blessings and directives from the Rebbe.
The family lived in Crown Heights between 1983 and 1988. They later moved to Flatbush and finally in Far Rockaway, a neighborhood in the borough of Queens.
He is survived by his wife Abigail Stein, and children Shoshana – Albany, NY, Dovid – Flatbush, NY, Moshe – Monsey, NY, Leah -London, UK, Chanie – Bristol, UK, Meir – Far Rockaway, Malky – Bayswater, NY, Menachem – Far Rockaway, NY and Tsirel – Bayswater, NY, and grandchildren.
The levaya will take place Tuesday at 6:00 PM from Shomrei Hadas Chapels, 3803 14th Avenue. It will pass by 770 Eastern Parkway at 7:00 PM for burial at Chesed Shel Emes, 113 Old Turnpike, Woodridge NY 12789 at 9:30 pm.
The family will be sitting Shiva at 608 E 8th St, Brooklyn, NY 11218.

Bsd BDE i remember Aviv and his wife and family in in Austin Texas with. Rabbi loschak obm we had wonderful times and grew together. I will fondly remember him and those days. The family should only have simchas and nachas and give the Rebbe nachas. We should have Moshiach Now and all be reunited in yerushaliam

A truly special and sincere individual. Very low-key and unassuming but made an incredible positive impact on those who knew him, in Bayswater and beyond. A sheiner yid.
