Alter Rebbe Portrait Revealed
A portrait revealed Tuesday is said to be of Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, the founder and first Rebbe of Chabad and author of the Shulchan Aruch HaRav and Tanya. Sources said the photo was passed over from family to family in the last 200 years. Librarian Rabbi Berel Levin told COLlive: "I've seen this in the past and have nothing to add." More

could be r’ chaim avraham who bore a strong resemblance to his father the AR
Maybe it is a picture of the Alter Rebbe you never know, but that doesn’t mean that you can just go and say things such as “maybe it was his son” or “it looks like a misnaged not like a chassid” How do you know? Anyway thats my opion.
Did you ever think that someone might have paintedit?
it looks a bit like the Tzemazch Tzedek
ANY UPDATES ?
not at all like vilna goan, right “class 8 boy” (y.w)!!!!!!!?
What are u on about the painting we have of the a rebbe was arranged and veriffied by the t tzedek
that is difrent all right.
Re the Tzemach Tzedek – I am very confident that the Rebbe knew about the new picture being put out by the Central Committee. Why i ask did the Rebbe NOT utilize that one that they “discovered” after 1994. It seems to me that there is less than a full measure of trust by these individulas in the Rebbe and his decisions. i am not speculating out of anger or negative energu. Only stating something that has me irked that these kinds of major changes have begun to appear in Chabad and they are upsetting at the very least. We… Read more »
it could be that this is r. chaim avrohom (the alter rebbe’s son)witch was known to look like the alter rebbe, and he was mistame alive after photography was invented -to #8
the first portriat should both be authentic if we belive that the “standard” portiriat of the alter rebbe to be authentic, even though it was discoverd in the offices of the czar,so if this “new” picture was from bies harav, how much more so should it be authentic
chassidim said that the alter rebbe had a large forehead. that is also true in both paintings or whatever’s.
The picture to the left has a very soft looking face, but the right one is very stern. and also, the left picture has a scar on the nose, as we know the Alter Rebbe had.
its does not matter what out perceived image of an angelic alter rebbe is but rather one i would like to know which is actually. why must we fit the rebbe’s into what we want them to be but rather taken them as they are. we need rabbi levin to confirm or deny this is an important historical find – why does he have nothing more to add. i will be calling him today to work this is out.
Whats the difference. Will it effect your avodas hashem?
The picture to the left does not fit the Alter Rebbe’s lofty and angelic personality. It looks more like a misnaged than a chosid.
The Alter Rebbe’s picture was always a drawing, never genuine so it can very well be that this is the true picture but why is colive posting when they are not forthcoming with more details.
I agree with the comment it looks like the GRA.
I am not convinced this is the Alter Rebbe. It has some resemblance but also very much like the Vilna Gaon.
Photography was not invented until 1839.
not quite
unless its just the lightung
The portraits are in the same pose. The yarmulka and hair pattern aresimilar. Perhaps, the portrait that we have grown up with is merely a touched up version of this original. A similar thing happened with the Tzemach Tzedek’s portrait.
I fail to see the purpose of posting this if it isn’t substantiated , or if proof of origin is forthcoming. “I have seen this in the past and have nothing to add” is a cop out. Add to what? that it is a picture of someone, or that it is an authentic one of the Alter rebbe?
Does it mean that Rabbi Levine agrees that its real, or that it is so foolish that he doesn’t want to waste his time to talk about it?
Also, through which family was it passed on?
Who said this is a portrait of the Alter Rebbe? It could be a portrait of anyone. Who are the “sources”?
looks more like the vilna goan, no?
