Rabbi Avrohom Osdoba, Av Bais Din of Crown Heights and Rabbi Hillel Weinberger, Av Bais Din of Serdahely, recently traveled to the Zakon Winery in Upstate New York.
The plant is said to be the only wine and grape juice manufacturer in the USA in which the owners and the employees involved with the process –from the crushing of the grapes until the final bottling– are Shomer Shabbos.
The rabbis’ visit was intended to observe and inspect the yearly wine crush for the popular labels Kesser and Farbrengen, just as they have done in previous years.
Owner and winemaker Yossi Zakon, who has been in the business since 1978, said he was very excited about this year’s grape harvest.
“This year we had an amazing, extended warm growing season, with minimal rainfall,” he told COLlive.com.
“The grapes in New York State vineyards were hanging on the vines much longer than the usual. This allows for the sugar and acid levels in the grapes to ripen perfectly. G-d willing, they will evolve into great wines naturally, without the need of the winemakers resourcefulness.”
The labels Zakon, Kesser, Farbrengen and Seloh are sold in leading kosher liquor stores.
