Mendel Moskovitz was a young toddler when his parents, Rabbi Moishe and Miriam Moskovitz embarked on the long journey from Brooklyn, NY to the second-largest city of Ukraine in 1990.
In Kharkov, the young Shluchim family set out to revive the Jewish community of which more than half were murdered by the Nazi Germans (an estimated 30,000 people) and the rest living under Soviet rule.
Fast forward 23 years later.
The Moskovitzs married off Mendel to Chani Wolff of the Nachlas Har Chabad neighborhood in Kiryat Malachi, Israel, with many former members of their community in attendance.
They came to rejoice with the Moskovitz family and salute their dedicated work over the years to introduce them and many others to the way of Torah and chassidus.
“Their joy was not only because they were taking part in Mendel and Chani’s simcha – but that their bond to Kharkov and Yiddishkeit can never be extinguished,” noted Mrs. Miriam Moskovitz.
Russia’s Chief Rabbi Berel Lazar was present, as well as fellow Shluchim from Ukraine and the former Soviet Union. The Moskovitzes were one of the Rebbe‘s first Shluchim to serve there during the fall of the Iron Curtain.
The kallah is the daughter of R’ Zalman Wolff, a political activist and his wife Laya. Tel Aviv Chief Rabbi Israel Meir Lau, a close friend of the Wolff family, and a number of Israeli politicians came to say Mazal Tov.
The celebration continued when the newlyweds traveled to Kharkov and held their last Sheva Brachos celebration with the local Jewish community.
