On December 2nd, 2013, in front of Miami Lakes Town Hall, located at 6601 Main Street, we gathered to celebrate our tradition of Chanukkah, a Festival of Lights that lasts eight days commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire of the 2nd Century BCE.
Rabbi Mendel and Tzippy Weiss, parents to 8 beautiful children lit a beautiful Menorah for the very first time in Front of the New Miami Lakes Government Center.
The lighting celebrated freedom, hope, and lighting up the sparks within us all to do goodness and kindness.
Everyone had a candle which was lit up by a neighbor and then The Mayor, commissioners and Miami Lakes Jewish residents were called up to light the candles.
Following the lighting there was live music and latkes, and donuts were enjoyed by all. The cows living on the piece of land adjacent were so attracted to the lights of the Menorah that they all pushed up against the fence to get a good view.
The Town of Miami Lakes was visited by a Mitzvah Tank, kind of like a Jewish party bus, except residents were invited to make a blessing over food inside, and given a tour of the traveling “synagogue”. Thanks to the young men from Yeshivah Torah Ohr in North Miami Beach for attending.
