In honor of Chanukah, the children of the Preschool at Pittsburgh Yeshiva transformed their sensory room into a virtual Beis Hamikdash.
Each class participated by creating a sculptural representation of one aspect of the Beis Hamikdash.
The classes learned the details of their focus, brainstormed about the materials to use, assigned jobs, and worked cooperatively to realize their creations.
The youngest groups painted the Luchos, the walls, and Nicanor’s Gates. The Prenursery class created the golden Aron into which they placed the younger children’s special Luchos.
The 4 year olds created a larger than life Menorah with flames and a beautiful Peroches. Kindergarten researched and brought to fruition both Mizbachos, the one in the outer courtyard and the one in the Kadosh HaKadoshim.
They attached golden crowns to one and fire and “smoke” to the other. Children can walk around the life sized creation, interacting in tangible ways with the different objects.
Teachers in the elementary school brought their classes as a way to reinforce Chanukah learning, and the preschoolers are spending time dressing up as the Kohanim and Leviim, “lighting the menorah”, climbing the steps used by the Kohanim, and experiencing for themselves the sensation of being in the holy Beis Hamikdash.
