In 1985, a young Yale alumnus told Rabbi J.J. Hecht about his concern that there weren’t adequate resources on campus for students to learn more about their Judaism. That summer, the Ivy League Torah Study Experience was born, a six-week scholarship-based intensive to teach college students about Judaism. Since, hundreds of students have attended, and many now lead more observant lives.
My father, Rabbi J. J. Hecht, was very passionate about this program, and reveled in spending time with the students, answering all sorts of questions and working however he could to bring them closer to their heritage. The summer program is still going strong, and accomplishing at incredible levels to teach college-aged men and women about their Judaism. In honor of my father’s 34th yahrtzeit this summer, we considered what could be done to buoy an already successful program. There had to be something more we could do for these students.
After consulting with the director of the now-named Jewish Summer Fellowship, Rebbetzin Baila Hecht we decided one of the best ways to help students starting to build their own homes is to help them get there to begin with. Many who have taken on greater levels of observance than their parents enter the world of shidduchim without the support and familiarity of those who have grown up around the system. We are proud to launch a unique and informative Dating Course to help recently-observant, college-aged women and alumnae navigate the Shidduch world.
The course offers three sessions, each with a focus on a necessary approach toward making sure the Shidduch process will be a success. Sessions include learning what to prioritize, building meaningful relationships, knowing what may be holding you back. It will provide a safe and supportive environment to explore the intersection of Torah values and modern dating. Together we will dive into decoding attraction and chemistry, effective communication and conflict resolution. You will be uplifted and well prepared to build meaningful connections and navigate the dating world with confidence!
