COVID-19 continues to make its mark on the Jewish calendar, this time casting its shadow on Lag BaOmer. Lag BaOmer in Meron is perhaps the antithesis of social distancing – tens of thousands of Jews typically gather at the resting place of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai to celebrate his yahrzeit. The custom is an old one: The “Rashbi” as he is otherwise referred extended his blessings to all those who visit him on the 33rd day of the Omer.
Last month, as the pandemic built in intensity, the Rashbi’s grave was sealed to prevent congregants from gathering together. Since then the restrictions have eased slightly, and a small group of avreichim have begun to pray & learn at the once-bustling site. This Lag BaOmer, in keeping with Ministry of Health guidelines, a small group of emissaries will pray & learn together in Meron. It will be an extremely unique occasion, in stark contrast to the massive crowds of previous years.
A small group of emissaries, who are part of the kollel Ha’Or Shebazohar, are using this tremendous opportunity to raise money for those who have been affected by COVID-19. This includes those who have lost loved ones to the virus as well as those who have entered poverty due to its effects on the economy. Donors to the cause will have their names added to the prayer lists for Meron next week.
