With power out all over NJ and the Tri-State area after Hurricane Sandy, West Orange, New Jersey Chabad has opened its doors Tuesday morning.
A minyan took place at the Lubavitch Center Shul which did lose power, but minyan attendees were able to see by sitting near the windows.
Shluchim Rabbi Mendy and Altie Kasowitz were from the few who did not lose power at their home. Together with the help of their children, Rendel Leah, Chanale, Eli and Sholom, they spread the word that everyone was welcome to come over to their home for anything they need.
“We welcome anyone who needs to charge their phones, or any other electrical devices. Also, an emergency laundry load or hot shower,” announced Rabbi Kasowitz via a West Orange community yahoo group, which goes out to 1500 members.
“There may be other needs which I cannot think of. Please don’t hesitate to call me on my cell phone or respond to this email or just come over.”
Within the hour their 3 freezers were full as people came to save their frozen food items. Many left cell phones to charge and still others are coming over for meals throughout the day.
“Even though most people have gas and can cook, it’s much more enjoyable when you can eat with light, warmth and friends,” said Altie Kasowitz, “Hashem blessed us with the opportunity to share the power!”
