The Chabad-Lubavitch movement has advanced its quest to have the priceless Schneerson Archive of holy books and manuscripts back in its possession.
Chief Judge Royce Lamberth of the U.S. District Court has issued an order fining Russia $50,000 a day for refusing to return the historic collection on Wednesday.
The penalties will amount to $18 million a year, one news report pointed out. (Read the order in full)
It was made over the objection of the Justice Department, which argued that fines wouldn’t help resolve the dispute and in fact would be counterproductive, AP reported.
But as attorneys for Chabad Marshall /Grossmanv and Seth Gerber pointed out, no progress has been made by the Russian government since its own court ordered to have the library returned.
Lamberth had previously ruled the records were unlawfully possessed by the Russian State Library and the Russian military archive, AP reported.
In 2010, he ordered Russia to turn them over to the U.S. Embassy in Moscow or to the Jewish group’s representative.
Russia refused to comply, and it’s not clear Moscow will respond now. The Russian Embassy didn’t immediately respond to an email.
The nations don’t need a reason to hate us. They will hate us or Love us, but nothing we do will change that.
Nothing like some good POSITIVE Yidishe Chutzpah.
If they started procedures for reparations for all the Lubavitcher Chassidim
May we merit moshiach with all the books here!!!!!
Keep up in your holy work!!!!
If they’re not planning to pay.
It should be done “unter’n tish”
with the right people
the Russians will respond better
this is how they work
they’re not interested in big US daddy telling them what to do in front of the whole world
why do i feel there is something quite unsavoury about this? Slapping a fine on to Russia surely cannot be productive and only makes one worry about the safety of the Jews there.Surely there must be other ways …
Russia Should Be Fined Anywhere From A Billion To A Trillion A Day To Help The US Debt…
50 million, then they’ll do it,
