Chabad of Midtown Manhattan has closed on the purchase of its long time home, 509 Fifth Avenue, centrally positioned in the heart of New York City, COLlive.com has learned.
The monumental $42 million acquisition was finalized Wednesday and Thursday, following the auspicious chassidic day of Chai Elul.
Located at the “crossroads of the World”, opposite the New York Public Library, Chabad plans to occupy the flagship 12-story, 60,000 square foot building with expanded programs and activities.
Chabad Midtown is a popular destination for the working crowd, local residents and travelers from all over the world. Shluchim from all over utilize the center as a base when they visit their supporters and friends in the city.
Chabad of Midtown operates 6 permanent locations throughout midtown. Its Midtown Kollel has 13 full time members studying and teaching at the highest levels of scholarship.
Rabbi Yehoshua and Brocha Metzger are the Shluchim to midtown Manhattan.

well done to Binyomin D
Rabbi and Rebbitzen,
This was for me שמועה טובה תדשן עצם ממש. While I am so happy and excited for you about this, I am not surprised. I know it’s been a vision of yours since day one, and this success shows your dedication and focus on that goal. Mazal Tov on the rest of the building and may you expand your vision and perseverance to even bigger things to come!
You humbled Sukkah builder for 10 years.
The Rebbe was always for buying vs. renting. Look at 770 Eastern pkwy, then 756, then 786, then 788. There is a shliach who had no penny to his name whom the Rebbe told in Yechidus to absolutely buy. He was shocked, but followed the instructions, borrowing a dowmnpayment, followed by a mortgage etc. and today owns a $1M home free of loans. (I double checked the story with this senior shliach myself). Money to rent is money to the ‘garbage’ with no future equity. Money to a mortgage, B”H in the long run, creates equity. Wishing much hazlocho to… Read more »
