Chacham Yehudah Abitbol passed away earlier this week at his home in Casablanca, Morocco and was brought to burial this morning at Har Hamenchot in Jerusalem.
Chacham Abitbol was the true symbol of Torah, Mitzvot and a Baal Chesed extraordinaire while also being a successful businessman.
He is survived by his wife Mrs. Chana Abitbol and his children Rav Avrohom and Yaacov (Morocco), Dr. Sarah Avtzon of Crown Heights, Yitzchok, Gad and Aaron (NY), Rav Yosef (Kfar Maimon, Israel) Mrs. Rivkah Biton, Mrs. Leah Levy (Ramat Bet Shemesh, Israel), Yissachar and Mrs. Rachel Sahn (Jerusalem), and many grandchildren ka”h.
Among his many accomplishments, he is remembered as a past Governor of Marrakesh, Morocco where he instituted a law, abided by the entire city during his tenure, forbidding any Jewish or Muslim company to operate on Shabbat.
As well, he is remembered for his special devotion to Jewish widows and orphans, sending Jewish children from small villages to learn in Jewish schools in the larger cities, and for an open and hospitable home, where all Talmidei Chachamim from Israel and around the world would come to pay their respects and speak words of Torah.
The family is sitting Shiva in Ramat Bet Shemesh and at their home in Morocco.
