Over 250 people attended last week’s Melava Malka held in Lubavitch Center of Pittsburgh honoring Rabbi Yosef and Batsheva Deren.
Rabbi Yisroel Rosenfeld, Head Shliach of Western Pennsylvania and Dean of Yeshiva Schools, addressed the audience with a D’var Torah expounding on the theme of Kabalas Ol and commitment to the Rebbe’s shlichus which is personified by the 33+ years of their family life in Pittsburgh.
The Master of Ceremonies of the evening, Rabbi Eliezer Shusterman, narrated a moving slideshow that depicted the arrival of Rabbi and Mrs. Deren, and shared insights into the 4 decades of the Derens’ legacy in Pittsburgh, including the Rebbe’s brachos and directives for their Shlichus in Pittsburgh.
The Deren’s oldest child gave several anecdotes and examples of their dedication and commitment. Rabbi and Mrs. Deren are involved around the clock as principal to Yeshiva students, shchita, and parental love given to their own children as well as to the countless Yeshiva students who lived
as children in their house over the course of many years.
Rabbi Aaron Herman, principal of the Tzohar Seminary in Pittsburgh, discussed Chassidishe stories relating to themes of Tanya, education, and intelligence.
After being presented with a gift of appreciation, Rabbi Yosef Deren responded with the words of the Rebbe and inspirational comments of our life’s goal to bring Moshiach.
The evening was elegantly catered and very well attended by a wide spectrum of the community. Rabbonim, Shluchim, Baale Batim, and alumni all gathered to honor the Derens. In attendance were Mr. Zev Rudolph, Rabbi Chaim Balsam, and Mr. Shlomo Jacobs, and Mr. Chaim Saul, all Executive Board members of Yeshiva Schools.
Live music was provided by Mr. Moshe Pekkar.
