Once the Alter Rebbe, Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, declared in public: “We must live with the times.”
The elders of the chassidic community queried the Rebbe’s intent and received the following reply:
“The Torah is G-d’s truth, eternally and universally relevant. However, it can also provide the specific guidance that an individual needs at every moment of life. By contemplating the weekly – and more precisely, the daily – Torah reading, we can learn how to live spiritually in every situation we encounter.”
A new book, originally published in Hebrew by Heichal Menachem and now available in English, does just that – and in time for the new Chumash Devarim – with insights into the weekly Torah readings from the works of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson.
Based on the Biurei Chumash series of the Rebbe’s commentaries, “The Divine Prism” presents a varied range of insights intended to empower a reader as he confronts the challenge outlined above.
It provides illuminating interpretations, but far more importantly, it trains the reader to think creatively and in that way discover insights that enable him to see how the Torah’s eternal truths can be applied in and in that way, enrich his day-to-day experience.
It was written by by Rabbi Mendel Kaplan and Rabbi Menachem Mendel Reitzes and translated into English by Rabbi Eliyahu Touger of Jerusalem and Rabbi Sholom Ber Wineberg of Kansas City.
“Unlike the previous Rebbeim who taught primarily though delivering maamarim (formal chassidic discourses), the Rebbe, by contrast, primarily taught through sichos – informal, accessible talks – relating to his listeners on their terms, speaking in their language,” Touger notes.
“In his sichos, the Rebbe explained the deepest mystical truths of chassidic thought in a straightforward manner that his listeners could comfortably understand, identify with, and apply in their everyday lives.”
