Finally an objective news source is coming to New York City — “real news,” Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called it earlier this year.
No, not CNN or News of the World.
“Al Jazeera has been the leader in that are literally changing people’s minds and attitudes. And like it or hate it, it is really effective,” Clinton said.
“In fact, viewership of Al-Jazeera is going up in the United States because it is real news. You may not agree with it, but you feel like you’re getting real news around the clock instead of a million commercials and, you know, arguments between talking heads and the kind of stuff that we do on our news that is not providing information to us, let alone foreigners.”
You know, coming off a two-week immersion into debt crisis politics, in which President Barack Obama ordered us to “eat our peas” and First Lady Michelle Obama told us to “get moving,” I can use a break by listening to commercials advertising the finer points of camel keeping, or the benefits of designer khaffiahs over off the rack ones.
I could just imagine an Al Jazeera debate…
“And now, we have Professor Khaled Abu Mona from the Al Azhuta University in Damascus, who will tale the stance that there is a Moose-lim obligation for peacefully taking out Jews, against Hamas legislator Hamada Hamadan from Tehran, who argues it must be done violently. Khaled?”
Al-Jazeera English yesterday became available to Time Warner Cable customers by Verizon FiOS in the coming days.
RNN President Dick French said Al-Jazeera English is committed to covering “underreported regions” in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. There also will be some local and children’s programming.
While I have nothing against Al Jazeera per se — when it comes to Israel it is no worse than our beloved American channels — it does have a contact list of references that tilt heavily toward the Middle East. That would allow extremists over there to directly access U.S. public opinion in New York.
And while their programs can be listened to by cautious adults eager to hear the Arab point of view, their children’s programming has the ability to give over to impressionable minds a skewed look at the world.
But then again, it is no worse than what we already have.

+ Who in the White House Likes Al Jazeera?
The question is not who in the white house likes Al Jazeera, but rather who in the white house doesn’t…. And if this piece of news comes as a surprise to anyone, my question is where have you been the last two years? How about the new appointee to the Supreme Court? Chas V’sholom we will soon have shureeah law to contend with. And like the Pres. said after passing the latest debt debacle… “this is just the beginning” we aint seen nothin yet. Where is Moshiach?
