No Sun Illusion for Girls

Astronomy maven Rabbi Yoseph Losh lectured today to the High School students at Bais Rivkah in Crown Heights about the once in 28 years Mitzvah Birkat Hachama (Blessing of the Sun) that will be said this year on Erev Pesach. "There are many misconceptions on the topic," Losh said after being introduced by principal Mrs. Shaindel Teichtel. Photos

Amazing fact!
March 19, 2009 1:18 pm

this is going to be 3rd time in history that birchas hachama is taking place on this exact day. both times had to do w/ geulah. first time was at yetzias mitzraim and second im not sure.. i think geulas bavel and imy”h this year by final geulah with our melech leading us!!! lets do all we can to bring moshiach even before birchas hachama

question
March 19, 2009 1:14 pm

does anyone know if birchas hachama happens the same time in all parts of world? cuz acc to halacha has to be at certain part of morning, but doesn’t birchas hachama mean that sun is in the place it was at begining of creation? if so, entire world should be saying bracha at same moment but sun doesn’t sine everywhere at once. so if anyone knows…. i’d appreciate it!

March 18, 2009 4:35 am

uh, to the best of my knowledge, and what i’ve learned, the machlokes about when the world was created is between R’ Yehoshua and R’ Elazar, so where does R’ Shmuel come in? Acc to R Elazar it was in Tishrei – and we hold by that for practical purposes of counting the months of the year (e.g – Rosh Hashana is the beg of the Jewish year) Acc to R Yehoshua, it was Nissan, which we hold is when “ala b’machshava” – and they each represent different aspects, which I’m sure others more knowledgeable than me can post more… Read more »

Learn the Sicha
March 15, 2009 2:48 pm

From these comments (and also from the info given here), it seems that people have a lot of misconception on the matter. It is reccomended to learn the Sicha on the subject. The Sicha is in Yiddish in Likutei Sichos Vol. 16 P. 94, and in Hebrew in Likutei Sichos Vol. 22 P. 229.

thank you very much for clarifying this point. i think that it just slipped my mind. also, i made a mistake in my previous post- when i said that it needs to happen at 6:00 at night i meant to say 6 at night but in eretz yisrael. any other information, please post it thnx.

thank you for clarifying the name for me it seems like it just slipped my mind. and the birchas hachama – we go according to shittas shmuel. the other shitta is shittas rav adah. they have different calculations but when you multiply both of them by 19- the calculations are aqual. qhich means that birchas hachama will come out every 28 years. btw, i made a mistake: when i said that one of the conditions for birchs hachama to happen is 6:00 at night- but this means in eretz yisrael.

Rabbi Losh is an amazing speaker it was very interesting and it only happens once every 28 years!!!!!!!

you didnt learn this in school?
March 15, 2009 12:00 pm

omg! i cant believe that none of the above posts learned about the machlikes of when the sun was created!. there is a machlokes between r’eliezer and i 4got the other ravs name. one said that teh world was created in nisan while the other said that it was created in tishrei. so we learned that there was really no sense of time back then and when hashem created the world in nisan and adam was created and then sinned, the earhts rotation became slower than usual and by the time the fourth day came around, it was tishrei and… Read more »

The Halacha is that by counting the years, we go by Tishrei, but by everything else, we go by Hashem’s Machashava.
