New York Jewish philanthropist Sam Domb, who accumulated his wealth in real estate and hotels, made a hefty donation to the Crown Heights community in honor of the coming holidays.
The head of the Empire Hotel Group and long-time friend of Chabad activist Rabbi JJ Hecht OBM made the donation to support 100 families in the Crown Heights Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn.
“He is an incredible human being,” said Rabbi Shea Hecht, Chairman of National Committee for Furtherance of Jewish Education (NCFJE), which will be distributing the funds to families they assist annually.
“I have known (Domb) for nearly 3 decades,” Hecht added. “He is a true example of Ahavas Yisrael and Chesed. Tzedakah is a preparation and part of our prayers for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur.”
Domb, a Holocaust survivor, is known for his outspoken support of Israel and has numerous high-profile contacts in Washington, Israel and abroad whom he petitions for the welfare of the Jewish nation.
COLlive.com was told that the amount he contributed to Crown Heights is in the 5 figures.
Philanthropy apparently runs in the Domb family.
NCFJE recently announced Sam’s daughter Michelle Domb, owner of the Pearl Hotel in New York and a philanthropist in her own right, will be Guest of Honor at their Annual Awards Dinner this November 20, 2011.
Michelle Domb has been largely responsible for the burgeoning Young Leadership of the 71 year-old NCFJE, mostly by running a number of high-profile events in Manhattan.
“They’re really exceptional people. I have nothing but the deepest respect for them,” Rabbi Hecht said.
SHEA YOU ROCK
Now that the focus is on needy families, I hope others will join Mr. Domb and send their donations to add to Mr. Domb so that the NCFJE can help many more families. This is a long time mission of the NCFJE. They should continue and in the coming year all of us should not need help and be able to stand on their own two feet, but until that time, let us who can give so that we should not have to take. A Shana Tova to all
A great deed and beautiful mitzvah indeed on the part of Mr. Domb. The check, however, is not as large as many may imagine, and therefore can assist a limited amount of families/individuals. Therefore, the quota of 100 families helped is unfortunately easily achieved without even batting an eye!
Tizkeh l’mitzvot tamid to Mr. Domb, k’siva v’chasima tova and “your welcome” to all who say “thank you” as well as to those who don’t.
B”H We need more togetherness like this to bring Masiach now.
Why does there always have to be grumpy person commenting? My motto is if you have nothing nice to say dont say it at all!
#22 that powerful did you see it on video.would like to see it
went by the rebbe for dollars an untold number of times. on 26 adar 5752 a day before the rebbe fell, he wished the rebbe ” the rebbe zol zein gezunt ” the rebbe answered: ” betoch klal yisroel….”
Many of the people who drive fancy cars do pay full tuition. Ask the administration why the teachers aren’t being paid. Regarding the fact that many in our community can’t afford to pay, the administration should hire fundraisers to cover those that NEED scholarships.
Mazal Tov to Michelle Domb on her honor. What an amazing family. Rabbi Shea keep up your good work.
I give to people in CH. I just don’t make a song & a dance about it. Therefore, you naturally assume that no one is giving. I like the logic.
i heard it was 5m
True. people in Ch who have money and give money are generally giving to shluchim and people outside the community. Your child school should be #1 priority for tzedakah. why is it that our teachers are not getting paid? people are driving fancy cars buying houses but have no money for tuition
very true ( # 14) and a real shame!!!
B”H
Shea,
The article says he is very pro-Israel. I am looking for a sponsor to translate a book from Hebrew to English that has every sicha, letter and what have you from the Rebbe spanning over 30 years. If the world were to know what the Rebbe says on the issue, I believe and know that things in Israel would be a lot better. rebbe1.tirgum@gmail.com
we should be ashamed that the help is coming from people outside the CH community. the CH community has alot of people with lots of cash. people that are millionaires and millionaires. but they wont help the families or the schools in crown heights.
SHAME ON CROWN HEIGHTS AND A GREAT THANKS TO Mr Domb
Go menachem!!!
The families in Crown Heights want jobs they can get up early for and get on a train and be proud~!~!!!!
did u not see it in the back?????
bh
may u and your family be blessed a hundred times over
My family is really in need of help… How can this help my family do I call Rabbi Hecht?
Notwithstanding Mr. Domb’s unquestionable generosity & philanthropy ( he really does give a tremendous amount of Tzedaka) Shea Hecht can easily name more than 100 families in need, not just @ Tishrei but year round. Let’s start with almonehs, single parents, the elderly, the unemployed, the homeless (or nearly) – the list is pretty much endless.
I hope some other people of means can follow Mr. Domb’s example. I’m sure many give quietly.
what an amazing and beautiful mitzva- mr domb- may you be blessed with health, wealth, and nachas !!!
Thank you Mr. Domb and Rabbi Hecht for thinking of the People of Crown Heights. This is a mitzva beyond words and may many more follow. Without someone watching over and nurturing the community from within, how can we mechanich our children properly that we send out as shluchim. Yashaar Koach.
Yeah and how do they establish which familes to help?
and the reason he didn’t get on the vaad is ?????????????
This is a man who thinks about everyone in Crown Heights
HE & HIS FAMILY SHOULD BE BLESSED WITH UNLIMITED REVEALED GOOD !!!!!
