A fictional character, created by a Lubavitch couple, has promoted the miracle of Chanukah on the social networking website Facebook.
Menorah Man, inspired by comic book superhero Superman but sporting his own Kippah and beard, has already gathered 580 fans and counting.
Throughout the eight days of the holiday, Menorah Man provided various links to the making of donuts to a Hollywood actor lighting Chabad’s Menorah.
Its creator, singer Moshe Kravitsky of Flatbush, told COLlive he was hoping to engage “Jewish kids (who) are growing up not affiliated with anything Jewish.”
With his wife Lea, Kravitsky introduced “a strong vibrant Jewish character into their most important, most cherished daily social activities, Facebook.”
He added: “The magic of Menorah Man lies 50 percent in the vibrant colors and cartoon-like illustration, and the other 50 demands a whole lotta humor, clever and witty lines.”
As an example, one of Menorah Man’s status updates, read: “Just lost a whole buncha chocolate gelt to a buncha 7 yr old kids. Dashing out to the bank for more. What can I say, I have a draidle problem.”
And its seems the cool headedness did have some Pirsumei Nisa effect.
One Facebook member, Max Rosenthal, wrote: “I have become atheist in the last few years, and this group just reminds me why I still respect my Jewish lineage so much. One of the most important values is Humor!”
Kravitsky revels from this confession.
“It’s stuff like this that can alter a person’s life forever. Most of them kids from all over the USA but based on this post, I’d say that adults love the concept of Menorah Man.”
Members were challenged to inspire another person to light Chanukah candles and enter a raffle from one of these gifts: Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360, ipod Touch, $250 Cash Card or Mini Laptop.
Creaters of this Jewper Hero hope to keep his spirits going year-round. After all, his signature “And may the Schmaltz be with you!” may be suitable for Pesach too.
