Antwerp Mayor Bart de Wever, who threatened the city’s Jews that their Covid compliance may trigger anti-Semitism, paid a visit to Chief Rabbi Dovid Moshe Lieberman this week.
The city is home to 15,000 frum Jews and Covid-19 infections in two heavily Jewish neighborhoods of Antwerp were four times higher than the citywide rate, the mayor previously said, according to JTA.
“In the Jewish community, not everyone realizes this, they have their own logic, but the backlash of public opinion that I see in my inbox, that’s terrible,” De Wever told the ATV station. “If we really want to move toward a wave of anti-Semitism, this is the way to go.”
The comment drew wide criticism from Jewish officials in the city and elsewhere. JTA reported that in the past, the right-wing politician had enjoyed good relations with his city’s Jewish community.
De Wever now tried to patch up his relations during a meeting with Rabbi Lieberman.
“96 years old and one of the wisest people in the city,” the mayor wrote on social media. “The corona issues are hurting everyone. Please don’t let us point fingers at anyone. We will get through this together.”
Since the city cares so much about everyone’s health than why won’t they promote the safest drug hydroxychloriquine with zinc at the first suspicion of covid or exposure?
Sure it may not work for every last person but with 165 studies proving it would for a vast majority it will certainly prevent lots of unnecessary hospitalizations. And deaths. And lockdowns and masks. And transmissions.
Baffles the mind…
The mayer’s initial statements seem accurate
