Dep. Chief Charles M. Scholl, Chief of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South, has retired from the New York Police Department after serving the area for the last 41 years.
Scholl, who helped protect 11 different areas in New York City, served as the deputy chief of the 60th Precinct for the last 7 years.
“We are so thankful to Chief Scholl for his decades of service to the Jewish community,” said Rabbi Chanina Sperlin, Vice President of Intergovernmental Affairs of the CHJCC. “We will miss him and wish him well in the future.”
Scholl was often seen in the Crown Heights neighborhood at large events or at community affairs, such as overseeing the annual taking of a group photo of the International Kinus Hashluchim convention in front of Lubavitch World Headquarters – 770 Eastern Parkway.
Chief Scholl assisted with the setup and safety of the massive event which has resulted in some lighthearted moments between him and a few of the 5,000 rabbis gathered. A memorable one was when he exchanged hats with Rabbi Shimon Lazaroff, Head Shliach of Texas. The chief wore the black fedora, while the rabbi fit perfectly in the police hat.
“We are proud that rabbis from all over the world came to Brooklyn, NY,” he said in an interview 2 years ago. “The NYPD is here to protect them and made sure they have a great time at the convention.”
Despite happening annually, Scholl kept the same enthusiasm during the group photo. “It’s like a holiday,” he explained. “I feel important to be in charge of this event. It’s an honor to be among so many great people.”
Scholl most recently attended the Farewell Salute event for Detective Vinny Martinos of the 71st Precinct held at the Jewish Children’s Museum and hosted by Devorah Halberstam and COLlive.com.
Assuming the role of Deputy Chief of Brooklyn South is a familiar figure in the Crown Heights neighborhood.
Inspector Norman Grandstaff, who served as Commanding Officer in the NYPD 71st Precinct in Crown Heights 4 years ago, as well as recently in an interim position, will be promoted to the position, sources told COLlive.
“Chief Grandstaff will do a wonderful job in this position, and we congratulate him on the promotion,” Sperlin told COLlive.

The Chief was a wonderful friend to Chabad & the Shluchim. A real mensch!
He always told me the Shluchim picture was the highlight of his year. The energy he absorbed that day gave him the strength for the challenging days to follow in the NYPD.
Rabbi Lipa Brennan
We appreciate your hard work and dedication on behalf of all of Crown Heights,
You will be missed.
And a special thank you to Rabbi Lipa Brennan for putting your heart and soul into helping our community. You’ve invested a lot of time and energy over the many years you have been doing this work.
Thank you
MR
Please you are still desperately needed. Now is the time we need you most to investigate and expose the massive corruption, theft, criminality and oppression by our politicians. Band together with 50 other post-police force people and go after these criminals one by one. It’s now or never because once all the decent honest police with integrity quit or retire they will be replaced with radical goons who will do anything but implement free and fair law enforcement. We will become truly oppressed with nowhere to turn. Hashem help!
Urgent call your elected officials now! They want to pass this bill that:
“Relates to the removal of cases, contacts and carriers of communicable diseases who are potentially dangerous to the public health remove” Ie. Forcibly confine Covid cases or those exposed against their will. https://www.nysenate.gov//legislation/bills/2021/A416
Yes I remember him he was always making sure that we are safe and you always have a good attitude we will miss him dearly
