The sarcophagus is typically medieval European, and probably contains a knight. However, since the davening is really directed toward Hashem and not the occupant, surely it doesn’t matter very much who’s inside the coffin. Matter of faith really aren’t about historical minutiae.
a. Jews prayed in the alleged David’s tomb since the first crusade and barring of Jews for the first time since King David
B. king David is buried in Eir David, which is near the Dung Gate as it says in the book of melachim -“וישכב
דוד עם אבותיו וייקבר בעיר דוד”.
C. the actual site was well known until the destruction of second bait hamkidash
D. the place became again major place for thfila before the six days war, as again it was the closest place to daven near the Temple
I have davnned there many times, even on Shavuos, Dovid Hamelechs’ yortzeit. But have always wondered the credibility of the historic value regarding this place. Fact is, virtually no Rabbonim or Rebbe’s visit this site. I havent heard or seen any type of Massores that Dovid Hamelech is buried there. For those commenting on the Rebbe / Friediger Rebbe’s view on this issue, please provide sources. Notwithstanding the above, of course Jews should hold as much ground in Jerusalem possible. Especially this plot which sits on Har Zion in the Armenian quater, which has almost no Jewish presence. There must… Read more »
They said it doesn’t matter whether it’s his kever or not.
It is in fact very clear that it is NOT his kever, since the Tanach and Mishnayos tell us where he is buried, and this is nowhere close.
The Xians built the building in the first place, so why shouldn’t they claim it?
Rabbi Goldstein’s son told me they would give anything to take control of the yeshiva building, and to make it part of the church. Rabbi Goldstein was given lots of encouragement from the Rebbe to hold on to the building.
It looks like the vatican has infiltersted the comments. As is known there is a major war by the vatican and the government to take away the aincient building and claim it for the christians r”l! Rabbi Goldstein SHLIT”A of the Diaspora Yeshiva (a mechutan with the Gitlins and the Avtzon’s) with great Mesirus Nefesh is standing up to them single handedly and is worthy of our support and blessing!!!
It’s not a chutzpah of the Vatican to claim it; they built it, after all. And the upstairs room that they consider holy is of no importance to us at all. Only the room that has functioned for centuries as a Jewish mekom tefillah is important to us.
The place has been sanctified by all the centuries’ worth of tehillim and tefilah that have been said there, all the tears that have been spilled there. It makes no difference who if anyone is actually buried there. (And no, it’s definitely *not* Dovid Hamelech, we know approximately where he was buried and it’s nowhere near there. But the building may be over the royal tombs of the later kings of the House of David, after Menashe. It’s in the right area for that.) The Frierdiker Rebbe was very much into the importance of this site, and often called for… Read more »
We are davening there because it is part of Jerusalem, Har Zion. We MUST daven there, more than maybe event the Kotel, at this point. The vatican has tried to lay claim to it, what hutspa. Time to make your next simcha davka THERE!
I dont think in Israel it is recognized as his kever except by non jews
though i will admit it is better to have a shull then a mosque there.
I don’t get it. If we have no idea who is buried there, if anyone –not to mention if the site even has any connection to Dovid Hamelech — why are people Davening there?
there is a lot of debate on where king david was buried. no-one really knows..unless there was some recently discovered evidence this is not the verified kever.
