By Mrs. Miriam Moskovitz – Shluchim of Kharkov in Ukraine
This last week we needed to leave. The bombings on our city haven’t stopped – one hit our Jewish school. People didn’t stop streaming into our shul to receive a little food, medication and shelter. The danger to our lives has increased.
So we packed 32 years of Shlichus into 3 suitcases and traveled with a group on a dangerous journey that lasted a few days until we arrived on Kishinev, capital of Moldova.
We spent our entire life giving and hosting others and now we are forced to receive and be hosted.
The community here is wonderful. I lit Shabbos candles and felt like I was connecting to all Jews in the world who are praying for the welfare of Ukraine.
On Shabbos morning, we all recited the bracha of Hagomel for being saved from a dangerous situation.
With us for Shabbos was a Kallah from Kiev whose wedding was postponed (because of the war). We tried to make her a ‘Shabbos Kallah’ after all.
When we concluded the book of Shemos, we emotionally called out “Chazak, Chazak venischazek.” The entire world indeed needs strengthening…
Over Shabbos, our thoughts wandered to our shul, which we left. This structure has survived Communism, was turned into a sports center and over tens of years, we turned it into the heart of the community. What is happening there now? What will happen there in the future?
It is said that a little light can dispel a lot of darkness but there is so much darkness now. Over Shabbos I thought that against so much evil and wickedness – we also need to be bombing back. We need to bomb the world with good deeds, with light, charity and kindness.
I am writing this on Motzoei Shabbos as we are traveling. We are boarding a plane to Israel. May we have a Shavua Tov and be able to share good news.
