A Crown Heights family of six has fallen upon difficult times and is facing eviction. After suffering from health conditions, they were saddled with crippling medical debt. These unexpected expenses and trouble with business led to this financial crisis. They haven’t been able to pay rent for more than six months, and eviction papers have been filed.
The Rebbe’s love for every Jew is legendary, and going out of our way to help a fellow Jew was the theme of the very first Maamar the Rebbe taught us — Basi Legani — in which an example of each Rebbe’s Ahavas Yisroel is brought, from cutting wood and cooking soup for a postpartum mother to giving money to a Yid in need before even beginning Shacharis.
This Gimmel Tammuz, let’s emulate the example of the Rebbeim.
A small campaign is being held today to raise $18,000 to help this family out of the crisis they are in and to prevent them from becoming homeless R”L.

Maybe it’s about time to speak to the landlords to stop crushing the tenants and causing them to be evicted… וד”ל!!!!
I am a landlord but I only rent to non-Jewish tenants. They don’t expect me to have “rachmonus” and gladly pay the market rental price. Plus, I don’t get dirty looks in shul or whispering behind my back that I am worse than a poritz. Too bad I cannot rent out my beautifly renovated apartments to our own people but it’s healthier for me to deal with strangers. I feel bad for fellow landlords that are treated like villains. ecause of people like you I do no
This comment is an abomination.
Now we’re a bidennation.
First point is to give Tzeddukah for the family that needs to have their rent bill paid. Also, thanks to whoever offers to help family with paperwork (like they do in other communities that focus on inreach) for assistance, even while in the midst of crisis. Doesn’t help to comment “abomination”. People don’t see landlord’s point of view. Have been tenant, landlord, tenant and landlord. Usually it’s an overall normal situation (with bumps like anything in life). In one situation as tenant we really got the raw end of the “deal” (from people who do a lot of chessed, but… Read more »
The article mentions the following – “After suffering from health conditions, they were saddled with crippling medical debt”
Understand that there are tenants who are a nightmare to deal with…but in this case it appears that we are dealing with an exceptional set of circumstances where the main breadwinner of the household suffered a major health issue and couldn’t pay the rent. Now, is not the time for you play victim and show some rachomonos. In times like this, the community needs to get together to help the family.
Let’s help the family the article is about. Meanwhile, clarifying: Landlord was not playing victim but replying to the person who was blaming landlords for this situation (or any). True point you bring up that this is a medical crisis. So everyone just has to give Tzeddukah. I’d add we also get to work for shalom by not criticizing or defending different types of landlords (or different types of tenants) Just Tzeddukah and shalom.
You will be proud to say you turned fellow yidden away from the shchuna so you could be ‘healthier’ and get market price from strangers.
Please be reminded that parnasa does come from strangers. It comes from Hashem.
If you are meant to have it you will, even if you rent to yidden and *gasp* do a favor for a yid and give a lower rent as a tzedaka.
Where would klal yisroel be if we all said no to the mitzvos that cost us money?
Maybe it’s time learn a little Shaar HaBitachon and possibly rethink your policy?
Tell me you’ve never engaged in a productive economic act in your life without telling me… You don’t know what it takes to purchase, maintain and rent out a property especially in NYC! You expect people to do all they work so some family can move into a neighborhood they can’t afford? The “landlord” (spooky word I know) should sacrifice his financial future for himself and his whole family, and everyone else he supports? I think not. You clearly have never had a job or produced anything of value in your life. Once you have, I’m sure you’ll understand how… Read more »
Look into the Rambam, that the Rebbe said we should learn it! Rambam says that the simonim of the Uma Kdosha is rachmonim Bnei rachmonim, and who doesn’t have it it’s a choshosh maybe he’s not from the Jewish people.
Maybe it’s about time to speak to the government to stop crushing the landlords and causing them to have to charge high rents… וד״ל!!!!
Now, maybe you believe that the government is doing it for your own good, while the landlord is just greedy. In that case, think again about just what the government is taxing you for and what they’re doing with the money, ודי לחכימא ברמיזא.
Let’s help those who are having a difficult time, instead of trying to put more people into difficult situations.
It is SO expensive to be a landlord and there is so much agmus nefesh, especially in NYC. I bless you to become a landlord and see for yourself.

Look, a person/family/Jewish or none Jewish, money or No money, has to have place where to live no matter what. It sucks that Rent went sky high, and it’s going higher. I myself had problems with Jewish Landlord, and thought to give us a ride. What? I should take a Jew to court? And believe me, unfortunately lots of us don’t know the law’s, but I looked into it, we could have ripped them into pieces, fixing, maintenance and updates, but for our peace of mind i/we found a place, BH, and moved out. And you know what, our rent… Read more »
I am not a landlord.
But this “victim” mentality is horrendous.
Help people who need help.
Use your mouth for good things.
