“Ateres Chayah” – Chasidish school for girls in Crown Heights just started its 3rd year, in a new and bigger building, located at 242A Albany Avenue.
Below is an interview with Mina Leah Levine (718-213-0668, AteresChayah.com) who started and runs the “Ateres Chayah” school.
Why did you start the “Ateres Chayah” school?
The Chabad community in and near Crown Heights has Boruch Hashem grown, and the existing girls schools are full to capacity.
It created a need to open an additional girls school in order to cater to those families who wish to educate their children by pure Chasidic methods, and in an environment that would allow to reach each child.
Why did you call your school by the name of “Ateres Chayah”?
“Ateres” is a “crown”, every child is the daughter of the king Hashem – it means that we have to respect and take great care of every child.
“Chayah” is the name of the Rebbetzin Chayah Mushka Schneerson.
“Chayah” means “liveliness”. The Rebbe taught us to study Torah and educate children with liveliness and constant happiness.
What is your vision for the “Ateres Chayah” school?
My vision is that every child should succeed!
That every child should constantly have a stream of successes, which will empower her to use her talents in order to contribute to her fellow Jews.
And that she should succeed in always marching in the correct path of Torah and Chasidus with love and joy.
How do you manage to succeed with each and every child?
Every child is different and understands in his own unique way. We teachers therefore have to teach in various ways, using the five senses in order to be sure that each student will feel part of the lesson. For example: When I teach about the tent of Avrohom and Sarah, we build a tent with the students in the park, they get dressed up into the characters of the Parsha and they act their part, we add arts & crafts, baking, cooking, a game etc. It makes the girls feel close to the Parsha story in an enjoyable way.
Our goal is to find successes in every opportunity, whether it be talents, good manners, positive and cheerful talk, good behavior, achievements and progress.
We have to verbalize the successes of the girls and encourage with positive reinforcement. Which is also done by starting out each lesson by making the students feel successful with the knowledge they already know, and by not testing before you are sure that your student knows it all perfectly.
We have a special and successful method for teaching Alef-Beis and Kriah. Learning Kriah by us is a very pleasant experience – causing the kids to like Alef-Beis and Kriah. Lessons are done in two ways: one-on-one and in a group setting. Kids taught with this approach can on average master the basic reading skills within 2-3 months!
How does a young mother succeed in opening a school?
I always thank Hashem for giving me the merit, strength and willpower, in order to succeed in this important Shlichus, and for surrounding me with many helpers as my husband, his parents, my parents, my sisters and brothers, devoted parents and teachers and last and most importantly my 8 kids (בליע”הׁ) and my students.
Leah Levine is a teacher with experience as a teacher for over a decade in Israel and Crown Heights in kindergarten, Elementary and Seminary.
She is the 13th out of 17 children who are involved in Chinuch and Shlichus.
I was a SEIT (special ed provider) at Ateres last year and observed the incredible way Leah reached every child. Even my student knew alef bais beautifully. She also grew emotionally by leaps and bounds. Leah has keen insight and understands the strengths and challenges of each child. She has the gift of being able to discipline in a positive matter of fact and teaching creatively. A great experience
She has so many maalos and talents and we could go on and on and on. BUT THE MAIN THING: is that she is a TRUE MECHANECHES!!
SHE UNDERSTANDS THE CHILD!!! their emotional development is number one!!!
You could have the best lesson plans and curriculum, but if the child is not understood…… We lost the child!!!
How many children did we lose because of that!!!?????
She is going to change the way the schools run!!!!
Ateres Chayah looks like as high quality and investment as Bnos Menachem, as Chasidish as Beis Chayah Mushka, and as easy to get accepted as Beis Rivka with its low tuition. THE BEST OF ALL WORLDS…
“Kinyan middos toivos” is the most important part of school to me.
A great school is made up of great teachers.
Teachers who handle challenging situations properly.
Great teachers blossom when there is an encouraging/demanding principal.
This school seems to have the winning formula how much tiring it may be. Hatzlachah!!
IT IS A REVOLUTION!!!
Now all these Beis Rivka Seminary Crown Heights girls will graduate as great Morah’s!!!
And all the girls attending Ateres Chayah school will graduate with a positive outlook!!!
And mothers will be happy to be great mothers opposed to heartache of bad school reports!!!
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!
Seven Coolest Hours Of Our Lives – is the way that evidently mothers feel about this school, may all Crown Heights schools be this way ! ! ! ! ! ! !
I sent my daughter to Ateres Chaya, and IT WAS THE BEST DECISION I HAVE EVER MADE. She THRIVED, she was so happy and she learnt so much. IYH, I hope Ateres Chaya continues to grow until it is a school for K-12th grade – our daughters, and indeed the whole community. will be blessed. I would recommend Ateres Chaya in a heartbeat. It was the best year for my daughter, and the best year for me and my husband. We finally had a pleasant school to deal with. Don’t even stop for a moment to hesitate – just send… Read more »
Yes!!! She taught me too and I loved it!! What she teaches is so real and works the best! Mrs Levin has such great ideas and methods for kria and how to include each child to make sure they are each being taken care of for their individual needs!!
Thank you Mrs Levin and all those on her team! Moshiach now!
I took a 6 week kriya course to learn how to teach children kriya. Mrs. Levin taught us how to create handson lessons thourgh all the five senses. This year I would like to implement these ideas in my preschool classroom. It was incredible!
Mrs. Levine’s father is the famed elder Rav of the Chabad community in Beitar Illit, Rav Oher Lemil Cohen, who is been making himself available 24/7 to answer every question or dilemma in Chinuch and Halacha, all for free and in the most constructive way.
Who is backing this school? Chinuch? Halacha? Financially?
How much do they pay the teachers? Is it a good place to work? Are the teachers happy and devoted there?
There are already 4 Shuls in NE – CH:
1. Ahavas Yisroel.
2. Rabbi Sousan’s Shul.
3. Rabbi Yusevitch’s Shul (the Menahel Ruchni of the Ohr Menachem school).
4. Merkaz Dovrei Ivrit.
There are dozens of Lubavitch families living near the school in northeast CH.
I know that Ateres Chayah is just 3 blocks from Eastern Parkway, but how is that neighborhood on the northeast of Crown Heights?
Are they Al Taharas Hakodesh like Beis Chaya Mushka?
Will they accept Beis Rivka students temporarily?

Most wonderful kriah program. She taught us in bais rivkah seminary how to teach kriah and we tried it out on the pre1a girls of bais rivkah. FANTASTIC program! the kids really learn how to read, they ENJOY it, and they knew it very well. We ourselves now know of a way to teach kriah to our kids and students that is easy and guaranteed success! Leah Levine teaches with love and succeeds/
I taught in all 3 girls schools in crown heights! They are all wonderful schools, as well as the holy moisdois of the rebbe!!! However I wasn’t sure where I would send my daughters as I also was aware of the chesronos! We’ll 2 yrs ago we came from out of town in middle of the first ateres chaya school year! My daughter was in kindergarten and the other 3 girls schools were full! I put her there blindly and we were so happy! Baruch hashem we were blessed with a very good capable girl who would succeed in any… Read more »
Morahs Leah Levine, Suri Huebner, Sarah Keret and the rest of the team make a great educational staff thanks to their motherly and grandmotherly love they acquire as mothers of many children.
Ateres Chayah is lucky to have Morah Sarah Keret as their pre1A teacher, she teaches with great enthusiasm and she is one of the most experienced teachers in Crown Heights.
Do they teach English? social studies? etc
Thank you for all your love and warmth while teaching on such a high level in a way that all kids understand the learning!!!
Ateres Chaya is an amazing school we spoke to a different school about registration and the reaction that we got is that if one thing goes wrong your child will be kicked out this isn’t the way to be mechanech,we felt obligated to say yes even though we didn’t feel good with this treatment.B”Hwe found Morah Leah she greated us with open arms ,she promised us that my daughter will know how to read by the end of the year ,her promise was kept by the end of the year my daughter knew how to read . Morah Leah has… Read more »
This school seriously sounds amazing!
This is the first school that my 7 year old daughter Sorah truly loves. Morah Leah and the staff make Torah-Chassidus and kinyan middos toivos exciting and they’re on track to instilling a lasting love for Hashem and Torah in their students. They’re also top notch educators and care gor each student.
We were living out of the country for quite a number of years and recently returned to crown heights. We were looking for a small school so our daughters would have a smooth transition. B’hashgocho protis someone told us about ateres chaya and we decided to put our daughters there for the school year. We were b”h extremely happy and satisfied with the professionalism, dedication of the staff, the learning and the general atmosphere in the school. Our daughters learned alef beis and how to read in a very short time and have gained a lot from the devoted morahs.… Read more »
That there is another chassidishe school around!! There’s def a great need!!
All your experience in raising your kids and grandkids are so valuable for my daughter!!!
they are very understanding when its comes to tuition which is why i go out of my way to get them my tuition paid first
I think that COL Live also has a woman founder and publisher.
Women gets things going allot better than men, as they are not caught up in all the fights. It is funny to see two men not talking to each other due to Mshichizm etc. but their wives best friends.
WOMEN ARE BETTER NETWORKER’S!

Mrs. Levin was our teacher in Beis Rivka Seminary last year. She taught us amazing skills that we will Be”H use.
Thank you Mrs. Levin!!!!
You are such a source of inspiration for all women in Crown Heights, that a woman can herself revolutionize and open such a great and big company, and you did it in the hardest industry to succeed: education, and with the most complicated customer: the government.
The Rebbe wants women to unleash their powers and create allot of goodness in the Jewish nation!
This is the only girls school around here that the boss is a woman, and the only boss of the school!
Mrs. Levine, you are the greatest Seminary teacher in Beis Rivkah. You taught me so much, especially on how to CONNECT with Yiddishe Kinderlach!
When my daughters Morah smiles ear-to-ear good morning to my daughter I realize the sincerity and I right away see my daughter mirror it back to her Mechaneches!!!
ילכו מחיל אל חיל
Who first care about each and every child, with a positive eye for every kid without exception, and only after about the million skills and endless knowledge, but since they are so affectionate so the girl is a kli to accept at an allot higher level than any school.
I love their Kindergarten, pre1A and Kita Alef, and I think that they should open the next grades already now
I love their new beautiful 3 floor building!
I recommend it for anyone seeking a very safe and Chasidish education for their child!
They have a great location just 5 houses near Branovers new bakerie. northern crown heights is become frum again.
They have a great staff of 5, and I see that they are hiring more. I like their ads that they focus not on degree but on how devoted their staff are!!!
the school just started in a 1 room in her aunt’s basement 2 years ago with 3 students… oh how it is growing!
Mrs. Leah Levine, from the large Cohen family who have started and run great schools, likes to give back to the community as her father the famed rav Osher Lemil Cohen who together with his wife Chayah a Kriah expert have their own seventeen children and well over 100 grandchildren.
After helping her sister Nechama Shachar startup a most successful and large girls school in Israel, now Leah’le is redoing it herself in Crown Heights. Thank you!
Ateres Chayah is revolutionizing Crown Heights Chinuch, just like Ateret Chayah Mushka revolutionized Chinuch in Beitar Illit, Israel.
the school is micro managed, to the children’s and parents delight, but surprisingly to the teacher’s liking too, as the principal demands that her school be in the highest quality like Bnos Menachem…
The management actually likes and respects parents!
I have not met a lower priced school around here
I send my daughters to “Ateres Chayah” and they are very happy!
So nice and professional!!! Good luck!
Kol Hakavod! Wishing you much success!
leahle ur the best
Hatzlacha Rabba & A Good G’Benchted Year!
