There has been an outbreak of flu in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood, with two cases being treated, COLlive has learned.
In a letter released Friday to COLlive and the Jewish schools, local physicians confirmed that Influenza A virus subtype H1N1 has been detected.
“This virus is highly transmissible – it spreads easily and quickly to most exposed individuals,” they wrote. “This will be no more than a ‘regular’ flu virus with a range of illness.”
In the joint statement, doctors Eli Rosen, Hillel Isseroff, Avraham Gottesman, Robert Feldman and Allan Plaut said the outcome can be “just feeling unwell, cold symptoms and fever, or more severe illness requiring treatment.”
They asked those who are ill to keep away from public places such as work, school and Shul. Infectivity begins 1 day prior to onset of illness and lasts as long as the individual is ill.
Dr. Rosen told COLlive: “I’m going to Shul this Shabbos. If you are an 80-year-old with a cardiac condition, you might want to consider. But it’s not something to worry about.”
Asked how the flu came to Crown Heights, Rosen said: “It makes no difference. We need to tune down the panic. The swine flu has changed favorably – it has weakened immensely.”
Rosen confirmed he has been treating two proven cases. “They both are children,” he said.
In the event of exposure to the virus, the letter stated, the “high risk” group can receive prophylaxis (prevention) by taking a certain medication.
But locals with mild illness will not be treated, they said, and can expect to recover easily. Those with more severe illness must contact their physician, as treatment may be necessary.
Except Athlete’s Foot!

Did you realize how many times the facts you list there contradict each other? how can there have been 331 cases worldwide, if you just said that 200 in mexico died from it, and 200 cases were detected in texas (200+200=400) -besides the 141 cases you mention are confirmed in 19 states – no matter which way you do the math, it doesnt add up. oh and by the way, the 1 person who has died from it in the US is the same death in texas that you just mentioned a few sentences ago, no need to be redundant.… Read more »
you people out there posting crack me up that youre blaming this on merkox shluchim who went to mexico and a family that went for pesach. If you believe what you’re saying, why does it matter that there’s a flu? Why should this remind you to do Teshuva any more than anything else in the world? Does this target our community specifically, or is this the natural order of things, which impacts everyone everywhere? Do you remind everyone to do teshuva every time the sun comes up or the wind blows? Why especially now should we all do Teshuva? And why teshuva and not any other mitzva? Please, don’t give me vertelach about teshuva not only being about bad things … you yourself translated and clarified… Read more »
WHAT?? STOP CALLING TESHUVA FOR EVERY LITTLE THING? ARE YOU SAYING THAT YOU ARE PERFECT AND YOU NEVER DO AVEIROS? WHETHER OR NOT CH IS THE FIRST TO GET IT, G-D IS SENDING US A MESSAGE, AND FOR YOU TO SAY SOMETHING LIKE, “WE NEEDEN’T DO TESHUVA” MEANS THAT YOU YOURSELF ARE MISSING A PIECE OF G-D INSIDE OF YOU, B/C G-D WANTS YOU TO REPENT, AND NOT TO SAY THAT SINCE ITS S/P ELSE AS WELL, IT’S OK!! IF CHAS V’SHALOM, YOU GET THE SWINE FLU, HEAVEN FORBID (EVIDENTLY I BELIEVE IN G-D, AND AM TRYING TO REPENT) THEN… Read more »
As a mother, I’m used to all sorts of viruses. This is just another one. isn’t it about time some of you conspiracy-theorists stopped yelling “FIRE!!” every time something happens?
So it’s a flu. Big deal…you have to treat it like any other virus. IF it gets serious, then you may panic. Until then, stop the hysteria, and stop looking for someone to blame.
i see its contaguis and EVERYONE should wash hands throuout the day
Either you are very uninformed or just ethnocentric, but CH is not the first neighborhood in NYC to get flu this week. The real swine flu was discovered at a school in Queens over a week ago. Get with reality instead of calling for Tshuva on every silly little thing.
get a mask and put it on…this is serious and anybody who wants to doubt how bad this virus really is, has to see the effect it is happening on the world… texas- a whole district of schools has closed leaving 50,000 children with no school…there have been 200 cases detected with 1 death.. mexico- at least 200 dead… The CDC says it has confirmed 141 cases of the new H1N1 flu in 19 states. One person has died in the U.S. The virus, commonly known as swine flu, has spread to 11 countries. The World Health Organization says 331… Read more »
There is a Kabala from the Baal Shem tov that one will not be harmed from immersing in a mikvah!!! (the previous Rebbe brings this in several places and once with regards to him toiveling in unclean watter).
DON’T BE AFRAID!
the people responding with comments on this site, are more often sounding like childish pathetic silly crybabies.
what happened to the more mature articulate individuals who used to respond and blog here?
These comments crack me up. Stop blaming it on the Swine flu, mikvah, Mexico, Mercas Shlichus, etc. _ viruses happen all the time. Deal with it and iy”h everything will be good.
My doc said not to go to mikvah too many germa
People, if your child is sick, DONT send them to school. Even if its not convenient to you. You are putting all the other kids in the school at risk.
I really hope that everyone will be responsible at this time and be very careful.
Thats the only way we can stop the spread of this virus to our whole community.
a few of you are just looking for who to blame, just listen to number 5’s message and take action instead of looking where to point the finger- like as if it would make a diffrence..
I cant believe this
maybe he can help:P
