The Jewish Community Council of Marine Park (JCCMP) held its 3rd Legislative Breakfast at the Kingsway Jewish Center Ballroom in Brooklyn on March 3.
It was the regular meet and greet where Jewish officials and activists get to mingle and chat with city officials and elected officials who are otherwise in Albany or Washington, DC.
The exact setting is what won Crown Heights resident Eli Slavin the Congressional Service Award which was given to him after much praise during the morning event.
Shea Rubinstein, Executive Vice President of the Marine Park Community Council, and others noted how Slavin’s tireless networking helped him lobby for the interests of individuals and the community.
It also helps that he is the community liaison of Congresswomen Yvette Clarke whose 9th district includes much of central Brooklyn, including Brownsville, Crown Heights, East Flatbush, Flatbush, Kensington, Midwood, Prospect Heights, Prospect-Lefferts Gardens and Park Slope.
“Eli Slavin has given much to many,” said Rep. Clarke. “You have done wonderful things for our community. I am pleased to honor him for his dedication to the people of Brooklyn.”
The award was given in the presence of Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, State Senator Eric Adams, Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein, Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, New York City Comptroller John Liu, District Attorney Charles Hynes, and Brooklyn South Police Chief Thomas Chan.
Many members of New York City Council were in attendance.
Besides for Slavin’s family, attending from Crown Heights were Chanina Sperlin and Eli Cohen from the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council, Shimon Herz of the Shalom senior center and Yaacov Behrman.
Another person who was among those awarded was Frank Seddio, the powerful Chairman of the Kings County Democratic Party.
Looking at Slavin, he commented: “I was the ‘Shabbos Goy’ at 770 and I will never forget the Rebbe, who also gave me a dollar and blessing when I left the 71st Pct.”
In his remarks, Slavin said he felt humbled by the honor and that he hopes to continue using his connections to help people.
He said he is guided by the words of the Baal Shem Tov, the founder of chassidus, who said that a soul may descend to this world and live 70 or 80 years in order to do a favor for another.
“I have been blessed to be in a position to help others in their time of need and I thank Hashem for putting me there and to our excellent Congresswoman for having faith in me.”
with all the great things E Slavin does for people and his community he deserves a dinner, not just a breakfast.
A well-deserved honor.
