Miles away from their families, deprived of comforting traditions, and confined to a limited environment, thousands of Jewish men and women in prison and on military bases were facing a lonely High Holiday season this year. From far and wide, the Aleph Institute received phone calls, emails, and even handwritten letters asking for help.
Over Rosh Hashana, 38 Aleph rabbis and volunteers traveled to 21 facilities around the country to lead inspiring High Holiday services for more than 315 people. For Yom Kippur, 34 volunteers plan to travel to 15 institutions as well. This month, Aleph is sending more than 4,600 ritual items and supplies — including machzorim, lulavim and esrogim, sukkahs, food packages, holiday publications, and more – to incarcerated men and women, as well as soldiers on the front lines, across the globe.
Now, Aleph is turning to the community to ask for your support in answering the call of those in need. During the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah when we devote ourselves to the pillars of Teshuvah, Tefilah, and Tzedakah, please donate to Aleph’s High Holiday campaign and help ensure that our brothers and sisters can join with the broader Jewish community in celebrating Yom Tov, even in the most isolated environments.
Your gift can help sponsor a minyan at a prison (cover for the cost of an RV where volunteers stay), send holiday gift packages to struggling families, allow chaplains to lead services on a military base, and more.
