Jewish community leaders from Crown Heights, Boro Park, Williamsburg and Flatbush met Thursday with Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez to discuss issues affecting the Jewish communities.
At the meeting, which took place at the office of the DA, the group of Jewish leaders and activists also met with heads of the departments of the DA’s office.
Some of the issues that were raised included drugs in the Jewish communities, squatters in vacant homes, and hate crimes.
Other issues raised included seeking a solution for minor crimes arrests of Orthodox Jews that occur just before Shabbos, requiring a prison stay until Monday, as well as the hiring of translators who speak fluent Yiddish, who can properly convey the language and assist any Orthodox Jews who are under arrest.
Attending the meeting from Crown Heights were the CHJCC’s Chanina Sperlin, Zaki Tamir and Eli Cohen, as well as Devorah Halberstam.
Halberstam thanked the DA for “being so caring and interested in the issues the Jewish communities face.”
Also in attendance from Crown Heights was Yaakov Behrman of Operation Survival Drug Prevention Program.
Then the real issues were not addressed such as: oppression of poor Jewish families, Domestic violence in Orthodox Jewish homes, ridiculously high, oppressive rent and Yeshiva tuition… NY you need an overhaul. Learn from the Jewish communities in the Midwest that care about each other and are not trying to make a buck off their brethren.
