Thousands of all walks of Jewish life came to witness the lighting ceremony of the World’s Largest Chanukah Menorah on Sunday, the sixth night of Chanukah.
“The Rebbe teaches us that this is the last generation of exile and the first generation of Redemption,” said Rabbi Shmuel Butman, Director of Lubavitch Youth Organization, who led the lighting. “May the Chanukah lights usher in the eternal lights of the Great Redemption.”
Hot latkes, the traditional Chanukah food of potato pancakes fried in oil, was offered to participants, who also enjoyed live music by Yossi Cohen and the entire Plaza was transformed into one great Chanukah party.
Chanukah “gelt” was distributed to every boy and girl by the Tankists of the Mitzvah Tanks, under the auspices of the Lubavitch Youth Organization and under the Directorship of Rabbi Mordechai Hirsh.
The Menorah served as a central point during the Mitzvah Tank Parade when Tankistin “camped out” near the Menorah and provided Chanukah Menorahs kits and jelly donuts to the many Jews in Manhattan. “They did a wonderful job,” noted Rabbi Butman, who is Chairman of the Mitzvah Tank Office.

Mordy’s Chanukah Tanks distributed Chocolate Chanukah gelt at the lighting ceremony of the World’s Largest Menorah.
The tanks continued on to sites throughout Manhattan.
Not that it would be worse ,but was the gelt real money or chocolate money?
