Once, the young children of the Rebbe Maharash, Rabbi Shmuel of Lubavitch, were playing. The older brother, Zalman, dug a ditch and placed his brother Sholom Ber inside it.
The young child began to cry. Rabbi Shmuel heard the wails and came to see what was happening.
Zalman explained to his father that, as the older sibling, it is only right that his younger brother be shorter than him, therefore, “I put him in the ditch.”
His father responded, “When you need to be taller, you don’t need to push someone else down. You can stand on a rock or a chair, and lift yourself up.”
