A Black Man Killed My Mother, But We Weren’t Told That

Op-ed by Sara Chana Shields: My mother Mrs. Pesya Leah Lapine was stabbed to death in her home in 1992 by a Black man, but I was told that a bad person killed my mother. The color of his skin was irrelevant. Full Story

Sara Chana you are an inspiration!

thank you so much
June 8, 2020 9:49 pm

you wrote a truly beautiful piece-

however, I sincerely wonder why so many these days feel the need to stick up for this cause, yet are nowhere around to openly support the Yidden they are a part of, and decry the violence, when Yidden are abused, insulted and/or killed.

According to the FBI statistics on hate crimes that is not true.

Any time another Yid is in dire straits, we turn over the world and storm the heavens with our teffilos. There are hundreds of WhatsApp groups that are dedicated to saying tehillim, thousands of organizations. We never leave a single person behind. I have heard so many stories about shluchim who have rescued people in the craziest of situations. How can you minimize how much we as Yidden do for one another? “So many these days” realize that it is important to be a mentch to the people with whom we share a community, our neighbors. you say “one black man killed my mother, not the black people.” well I got news for you: One white cop killed George Floyd. NOT THE WHITE COMMUNITY! I do not need to feel responsibility for one bad (white) person.

One white man

June 9, 2020 9:00 am

One white man killed George Floyd. Several more stood idly by. Examples of race based police malfeasance abound. 99% good isn’t good enough, when we send a person out with a gun, and constructive immunity.

i don't understand your point
Reply to  One white man
June 9, 2020 10:46 am

It sounds like your point is that in matters of life and death (guns), 99% is not enough and therefore protesting against all whites for the actions of one police officer is somehow justified.
I have news for you, the killing of Mrs. Lapine was also a life and death story, and yet, since it was by one person only, her daughter is beautifully writing how she focuses on the 99% positive people of the race, so I think her positive message can indeed be applied to seeing the positive of the white people and the good cops

More importantly a POLICE OFFICER killed George
Reply to  wow
June 9, 2020 3:13 pm

The goal of these protests is to hold police accountable for their actions not to persecute white people. If you don’t agree with holding police accountable then that is disturbing. If you are being defensive as a white person for a community sticking up for itself you should take on Chana’s suggestion and replace your negative thoughts with a positive one.

I see

So you hold police accountable by burning down black-owned businesses. Brilliant.

Sara Chana you are Magnificent!
June 8, 2020 10:44 pm

If you can do this. then I can certainly follow your example and follow the clear path you outlined. Thank you! How proud of you. your precious mother must be.

Sara Chana, We had the privilege of knowing your truly wonderful mother whose positivity, dedication, bitochon, and connection to the Rebbe were outstanding at a time when Chabad was still beginning in Houston. You write clearly and beautifully: What naches your mother has from you and your siblings! We daven for what the Rebbe and Rebbetzin strived to accomplish throughout their lives: Moshiach truly now and that the entire world is healed (with all those in it), it is filled with revealed holiness and emes, and our precious loved ones are with us again in this world.

stereotyping vs racism
June 8, 2020 11:56 pm

Steroetyping is applying a box to a group of people. Fact: In New York City, blacks committed 75 percent of all shootings, 70 percent of all robberies, and 66 percent of all violent crime while comprimising 23 percent of the population* (no amount of op eds or protest is going to change this statistic). It would be fair to stereotype black people as being main drivers of crime in nyc. It would also be fair to apply this stereotype while walking or avoiding walking through a black neighberhood where lots of crimes are commited. Racism: the inability to differentiate between… Read more »

The word you might be looking for is “racial profiling”, not “stereotyping”. Racial profiling is what the Israeli airports use to assess bomb threats and whom to spot check. Leftists have tried abolishing this practice, yet most others strongly believe this practice makes sense and is in the best safety interests of ALL passengers. From Wikipedia: According to Ariel Merari, an Israeli terrorism expert, “it would be foolish not to use profiling when everyone knows that most terrorists come from certain ethnic groups. They are likely to be Muslim and young, and the potential threat justifies inconveniencing a certain ethnic… Read more »

Reply to  Wow
June 10, 2020 12:04 am

Because Jews don’t commit those crimes in any significant numbers. A Jew may embezzle your retirement account, but he will not mug you on the street. When you see a Jew on the street late at night you don’t have to worry; when you see a young black man on the street late at night you do have to worry. Even Jesse Jackson yimach shemo admitted that.

Yes. In CH jewish have problems with black people. But who lives in CH ? Black people and jews.
If you look at a Jewish community in a white neighborhood, 99% of antisemitic attack will be …. white people!

I understand the frustration since there is so much friction between our two communities. But racism is a international problem. Which is why it is okay to support the black community. There are black people who haven’t done anything to you. Or to the Jews. Think about them. Think positive. Let’s make peace.

Thank you

A beautiful article but ....
June 9, 2020 4:00 am

A beautiful article but I think we must recognize the statistics that Black Americans commit the majority of violent crimes in the USA despite being only 13% of the population. Whether it’s fatherless homes, poor education in inner city public schools, or a combination of that and other factors, Black culture in the USA needs reform.

Maybe they’re fatherless bc black men are more likely to be racially profiled and sent to prison or killed by police for having a counterfeit note? Food for thought…

I remember your mother ע״ה well. She was an exceptional lady. The Rebbe made a special mention of her by a public farbrengen as someone who passed away על קידוש השם. You are making a קידוש השם now with your powerful words!

June 9, 2020 7:40 am

The Rebbe said, “When Moshiach comes, we’ll read about it in the newspapers.” Mainstream newspapers and media like to focus on negativity and divisiveness. If they perhaps didn’t focus on the racial angle of the Minnesota event, things may not have gotten so out of hand. Newspapers need to unite instead of divide. The Rebbe said your mother will be one of those leading when Moshiach comes.May it be now.

Sarah Chana, I’m your downstairs neighbor, on malbone, SM, and I appreciate what you have to say. Baruch Hashem even though I vividly remember the riots at 6 yrs old, I do not have hate or racism, I have never been taught to hate. As chassidim we know there is no good without bad and no bad without good. The same attitude needs to be applied to cops. Is there police brutality? YES. Does that mean all cops are bad? No. There are people and organizations using George Floyd’s name as an agenda for their political agenda. Proof is that… Read more »

Police are expected to serve and PROTECT not murder. If they are not doing that they need to be fired. All that is being asked is that they are held responsible for committing crimes which currently they are not.

What are you talking about?
Reply to  Police are not an ethnic group
June 10, 2020 12:14 am

Policemen who are suspected of crimes are charged. Chauvin, who probably did not commit any crime, was nevertheless charged and will have to defend himself in court, against a prosecutor who is a fanatical black supremacist, an antisemite and hater of all white people, who openly supports cop-killers, and lies about his time in the Nation of Islam. So when have police not been held to account for what they do, IF they do it? And what difference does it make whether they’re an ethnic group, a professional group, or a musical group? Hating them is the same thing. It’s… Read more »

Thats why it makes a difference that they’re not an ethnic group. If a restaurant waiter killed an unarmed man on the job he would be fired and charged immediately – why is this not applied to the police? You mention Chauvin has been charged but what about the police who murdered Breonna Taylor? Or the police who murdered Eric Garner? Or the police who murdered Tamir rice? There is a pattern here and that is what people are protesting. About your last sentence – do you apply that same logic to people who dismiss anti-Semitism bc a Jew has… Read more »

Sara Chana as a non-white member of the community I thank you for your kind words. I also thank you for being vulnerable and stating that you still have negative thoughts and that you just have to work to push them out of your head and replace them with positive ones.
