Talking to children about the Holocaust was the subject of an inter-generational evening hosted by Chabad of Flamingo in Toronto, directed by Shluchim Mendel and Faigy Kaplan.
Mrs. Tuky Treitel, the protagonist of the book “TUKY, The Story of a Hidden Child,” was hidden in a farm village on the Hungarian countryside.
Together with her daughter, author Shterni Rosenfeld, they spoke to the crowd about this delicate subject, and the importance of sharing it with the youth. The two shared many stories both found in the book, as well as some which were not included in it.
As one of the participants commented, “Mrs. Rosenfeld read the book with feeling, even though she was in front of a crowd. Mrs. Treitel was as real as ever, and the two worked back and forth in a really nice synchronous fashion, that it almost made it feel like a mother and daughter were conversing with their family, and we were being led in.”
The book TUKY, The Story of a Hidden Child, published by Hachai Publishers, is geared for children 8-12. This book can serve as a first introduction to the Holocaust for elementary aged children.

mrs tuky treitel is truly a wonderful, classy, and beautiful person, yasher koach!!
I read through the whole book from cover to cover. Tuky’s story is incredible and inspiring! All can learn from her emunah and good nature, how to approach any challenges we face in our life. Written extremely well, these lessons are conveyed to even the youngest of readers. I agree wholeheartedly with #1, this book should be standard reading for all Yiddish kindergoinglach, to give them a good understanding of what the holocaust was, from a Yiddishe perspective.
Would love to hear her talk too.

The Tuky book is an important book that should be used as a school reader. It discusses the Holocaust in a non threatening manner, yet without minimizing it’s gravity or shirking the issue. Yasher koach!
As for “Tuky”, we all know she is a star and a celebrity. Now you know it too 🙂
