There’s an expression in Yiddish: “If good is good, is better not better?!”
For the past 18 years, Rabbi Yudi and Esther Horowitz have been making a difference in Plano, Texas. “We have had the zechus to be able to follow our passion as the Rebbe’s shluchim and help strengthen the Jewish and Chabad community in Plano,” shares Rabbi Horowitz.
But the Horowitzs had a dream to do more – to reach people in the greater Dallas area who were not yet being touched by Chabad.
“When we originally received the approval of Rabbi Mendel Dubrawsky, Head shliach of Chabad of North Texas, to establish Chabad of Carrollton-Lewisville, we didn’t know many Jewish families or have many contacts in the area. Family members would ask us how many Jews there are and although we knew anecdotally that the area was growing quickly, we really didn’t know what we’d find. But once our plans started taking shape, we regularly got names from friends, acquaintances – even the realtor who was helping us find a suitable house!” remembers Esther.
Just over two weeks ago, as their school-age children were packing their backpacks for the first day of school, Rabbi Yudi and Esther were unpacking their home. They’ve already hosted local families for Shabbos meals, delivered homemade challahs (via scooter and bicycle :-), organized a kids challah bake and rented a location for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur services.
The Horowitz’s chose the Castle Hills neighborhood, a family-oriented development of master planned community of 5,000 homes. “We’ve met a few Jewish families nearby, one even on our block, who were so welcoming. They are excited to hear about our vision of a vibrant Chabad Center in their own backyard,” says Rabbi Horowitz.
Fun fact! Both Yudi and Esther’s parents have homes on Carroll Street in Crown Heights – another small way that helps them feel that Carrollton-Lewisville Chabad will be a fitting place for them to continue creating a warm Jewish home for the Jews in this Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex suburb.
For the next 48 hours, Chabad of Carrollton-Lewisville is running a campaign to raise the necessary funds to properly establish the new Chabad Center. Partner with them to add another bright light in the Lone Star state! The Campaign page can be found here: jewishcarrollton.org/GROW
