Over 1500 people gathered at Brooklyn’s Grand Army Plaza to celebrate the first night of Chanukah.
This year’s annual kickoff concert featured the highly acclaimed Zusha band. Revelers, who gathered from all over the world, were pumped with holiday energy. Many could be seen dancing with gusto. Hundreds of mivtzoim menorahs and candles were given out to people who didn’t have them to take home and do the mitzvah in their homes. Hot latkes and hot cocoa warmed the cold chill.
Notable elected officials were on hand to participate in the celebration and share words of solidarity with the huge crowd including New York City Mayor Eric Adams, New York State Attorney General Letitia James and New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.
Crown Height Businessman Mr. Shimmy Barber was honored with making the three brochos and lighting the first candle. Mr. Barber and the Mayor also gave out a special gift to all the children.
Rabbi Shimon Hecht, Director of Chabad of Park Slope, addressed the crowd from the ‘menorah heights’. Rabbi Hecht highlighted the importance of our obligation to be proactive Jews.
“By the time the sun begins to set, we should already be engaged in promoting light and sharing kindness and love with our neighbors. It is not enough to hold this for inside our homes, we must share this light with the world around us thus preventing darkness from ever settling in our midst.”
New York’s television, radio and web media outlets featured this beautiful Chanukah celebration amplifying the pirsumei nisa.
The Largest menorah lighting and annual kickoff concert is a Project of Chabad of Park Slope, a division of NCFJE.
