From Texas to California, from Australia to Argentina, a Taste of Text is gaining a devout international following.
No, it’s not a recipe-tasting event to savor the latest in haute cuisine. It’s weekly classes to provide nourishing insights on navigating through the ups and downs of life, taught through the text of the weekly Torah portion and the lens of Chassidus.
It began this past summer when a team at Chabad.org, led by Chana Weisberg, an editor at the Judaism site and international lecturer, developed a text-based learning curriculum and invited a group of women to join her around her dining room table in Toronto after being outfitted as a Jewish.TV set.
“We know just how busy women are,” Weisberg says. “We also know how much people thirst for an infusion of relevant inspiration. Our goal was to make short, text-based classes to empower women to become active participants in serious learning, whether in a remote town or major metropolis.”
In addition to the views Taste of Text has been getting online, Chabad Shluchos requested that they be able to teach the material locally as well.
So the program was offered in advance of public release to a select number. Today, over 200 Shluchos are registered to receive and teach these classes in their own communities “and more are continuously requesting to join,” notes Rabbi Shais Taub, Creative Director for Jewish.TV, the video site of Chabad.org.
“It’s so valuable to use actual text material,” says Chaya Sara Blechman, shlucha in Edmonton, Alberta. “I fit it to my personal community, but it provides a basis. I also really appreciate personal anecdotes. I like the short summary at the end and mostly I love that woman can see other women learning.”

It is so special to see a fellow Lubavitch women giving a really Toichendik, text based, practical class to a group of women. I love the fact that it is actual learing, yet interesting and short enough for a busy woman to add a dose of inspiring learning to her day. The Rebbe wanted intelligent woman to be given the opportunity to be introduced to serious Torah learning, not just the fluff usually offered to them. Kol haKovod to chabad.org for realizing the Rebbe’s rotzon. And a big Yasher Koiach to Mrs. Weisberg for putting her talents into spreading Torah to the better half of Klal Yisroel.
