An account of unprofessional conduct on behalf of the New York Police Department was related to COLlive by two Crown Heights residents.
The incident concerning yet another break-in attempt into homes on Friday night, when Jewish families are at rest, adds to the local frustration of rising crime.
The following eye-witness account is based on a phone interview with two Jewish neighbors who said they were appalled by how the event played out:
“We were sitting eating at the Shabbos table, and we heard something outside in the back,” related Yosef, a married man and father of one. “We go outside and we see a black guy trying to get into the back of Dovid Malka’s place, which is behind my house.”
Chaim, another neighbor who is an EMS and has served in the past in the local Shmira volunteer security patrol, related the following:
As soon as I heard the noise, I ran outside to check because it sounded suspicious. When the man saw us, he ducked out of sight.
We went back in and then heard another noise. We go outside and saw the same individual rattling doorknobs in a couple of houses along the alley. He then disappeared again.
A few minutes later we hear him again, we go outside in time to see him carrying two boxes out of a garage, which we see him putting into a car. It was either a gold or beige Nissan Sentra or Altima.
At this point we called 911. The time was 11:45 pm.
I gave the dispatcher a clear description of the situation, that someone was attempting to break into homes and garages in the alley by Crown and Carroll Streets between Troy and Schenectady Avenues.
I also gave a full description of the man we saw: 6 ft. tall, approximately 180 lbs, wearing a light colored puffy jacket and a floppy military style hat, dark pants, small beard. And I gave the car description.
We waited outside for about 10 minutes, during which time we saw him come out of a different garage and back to his car again.
Still, no cops showed up.
We waited for 45 minutes, and finally a police car drove up. The officer was really uninterested in the situation and wanted to get away as soon as he could. He barely even looked around.
We told him that anyways the guy was long gone, since we had waited over 40 minutes for him.
The officer said that he had only then received the call to come to this location, saying it was called in as a “suspicious character” when actually we had called in about a breaking and entering.
After 15 minutes of arguing with us, he said “Why didn’t call your own people?”
We asked what he meant and he said, “The Shmira or Shomrim. They’re your guys, you should call them!”
We were shocked. “So you are saying we should’ve called unarmed, unprepared and unprofessional people instead of the police?” we asked him in amazement.
“Well, you know they have a much better response time than us,” he replied.
When we asked him to at least look at the area we witnessed him attempting to break into homes and garages, he quickly looked and then said, “I’ve got more important things to do,” and left.
A little while later a Sergeant knocked on my door, to get information from us. When we asked him why it took 40 minutes for the police to show up, he said, we only have 8 officers on duty tonight in this area, and there were other things going on at the time so we couldn’t spare them.
Response to COLlive from the NYPD 71st Precinct:
“The reason there were only 8 cops on duty was because all of the Hate Crime Task Force patrols end at 9:00 pm. Also, the block this occurred on was not included in the extra patrol area, since none of the hate crime incidents occurred past Albany Avenue, so that’s where the extra patrol ends.”
COLlive asked if this is the same individual that has been terrorizing the neighborhood since the summer?
Police officer’s response: “I don’t know unless there is an identification made, but that individual is, in fact, out there. He was arrested recently but the judge released him on his own recognizance, since there was not enough evidence to keep him. He is out there on the streets again.”
That answers my ques. He has a car. the other night he took from my van a case of water 4 case of soda a container with books a big heavy case of candles a big car jack.
We should all gather outside the 71 and protest. Show them we mean business.
Enough is enough.
THERE YIDDISHKEIT,HASHEM WILL HELP,THIS INCLUDES TZINUS AND HONESTLY
Hi Californian…
And get killed in the meantime???
Seriously
time to get rid of the new inspector . The lazy cops who responded to the call should get fired and put on trial for asisting a robber. The police in crown heights is useless good for nothing . when simonete , and lewis was inspector crime was down . They went after the thugs with iron fist . Ray Kelly was inspector at the 71. He knows everything that goes down but he decides to play with us like fools
We must get rid of the new inspector
NOT! you are not allowed to call the police in Shabbos unless is Pikuach Nefesh
You are very smart, but the only problem is, the building in ch can’t take additional electricity. The buildings are to old
NOT TRUE!!!!
there was a hate crime attack on crown st. btwn schenctedy and utica!!!!!
this makes absolutely no sense!!!!!!
The heter to call on Shabbos is that the Torah says there’s a chazokoh that someone who is breaking into houses at night, when people are there, is armed and willing to kill if he is confronted. Most burglars, in most parts of the country where householders are armed, only break in during the day when nobody is home, because they don’t want to be in a situation where they have to kill or be killed. If he’s breaking in at night it means he’s willing to kill, and that makes it a sakonas nefoshos. If he’s only breaking into… Read more »
What you report is actually good policing. It’s how Giuliani got crime down in the first place. The key insight was that big criminals also commit petty crimes and violations. If you catch someone in a minor offense, don’t just write the ticket and walk away, look into whether he’s also committed major offenses. Look for warrants, ask him questions that might elicit probable cause for a search, etc. Most of the time, it will end up with just ticket, but sometimes you get lucky and take a really bad guy off the streets.
The responses of both cops are an outrage and only prove how the police cannot be relied on for protection. If this story doesn’t motivate you to get licensed and become a gun owner you must be an ostrich. The shomrim should sue based on this story to get carry licenses as well.
Isn’t it amazing that we supposedly elected a bunch of clowns for this purpose and you never hear a word about them. What happened to Chanina Sperlin? I guess there wasn’t a photo op! We r a sizable community today and we should have a new election and put in people who care about the community and not about private interest i.e. Braun Schwei.
Anyone know why they have five-eight police cars in front of 770 during day hours?!
I USED to let my almost 11 year old boy play outside, go to the corner store, walk to a friend’s house or come home from school when the buses aren’t running-alone. NOT ANY MORE!!! This STINKS!!! We need to do something & Hashem should help!!!
I guess now we know why so many pawn shops are opening up around here
Where is the good old guard? the Shmira of the 90’s???
They actually brought the crime level in Crown Heights way down.
crown heights is scaring me now…glad im on shlichus and dont live there…
They are all hanging out at the corner of Kingston And President, waiting for Gombos to open!!!! Donuts!!!!!
saw the said culprit on crown between brooklyn and new york last night around 10:15 Also there were no police out last night at all to watch our neighborhood only one shomrim guy on the corner of crown and kingston Time to have volunteers and have our own blockwatchers
on crown and kingston was at about 9:30
Are u aloud to call the police on shabbos for something like that?!
The cops here in Brooklyn are complete scum bags. I moved from L.A. a month ago. I was stopped by two black Brooklyn cops. because I was riding a bike on the side walk the wrong way on a one way, which is fine I was in the wrong. But it was the way they treated me that surprised me. They were interagating me like I was a high level criminal. Ask me were I lived. Why I moved here. Where did I work. What did I do. They were going to run my name for warrents but they got… Read more »
We are headed back to the bad old days when it was dangerous to live in new york and crown heights.
Wait for deBlasio to take office – David Dinkins on steroids.
Why in the world did you not call Shomrim?
Everybody put there number in your speed dial
The media is already on CH like white on rice because of Knockout. Time to bring THIS to their attention. Bad publicity for NYPD might bring results.
Homeowners….I suggest each block gets a few young guys to take turns to patrol alleys & be watchful. Even just stay awake in your own homes. You hear something…grab the bat & start hitting.
I can’t believe that in America today these problems are happening to you guys up there. wow just understand that not all African americans are down with that kind of stuff. organization is the key put guns in the hands of the gard. That’ll take care of the problems.
“Every jew a 22”
grab a bat and make a citizens arrest.
this sounds like a bad situation. but once a young boy tried to steal my phone, didn’t even get it and the cops took me around for a long time looking for him and then encouraged me to file a report…so it sounds a little unfair to say all the cops are bad.
if the nypd can’t protect us, then e/o should learn to defend themselves!!!!!!!
you answered your own question, you just moved here, g-d willing you will never have an occasion to find out what most of this community already knows, which is everything that is being said bout the cops. they are , inept, uncaring, rude slow to address any problem.
i just moved here and the nypd seem to be very helpful, and responsive, you guys just had a bad night or gave them attitude?
First off, the dig against Shmira /shomorim totally uncalled for. Now I am totally not surprised about the dumb police response I have been telling all my friends that the recent spike in Police won’t go past Kingston avenue and is all for show, sadly I was proven correct.
All homeowners must install proper lighting around their houses. This will be the first line of difence.
As a young girl, this really scares me. If the hate crime task force is only put until 9 pm, after that it is really unsafe to be walking the streets of crown heights. Is there no one in our community who can help make it safer in our neighbourhoods? Maybe until this is figured out we can find a way to pay shomrim to be around more. This situation has got to be helped.
The guy that they caught after weeks of terror and break-ins was let out!!
First of all, this needs to be taken to the media there are certain TV news stations that specifically zero in on cases that are treated as this was. second, if you want to get quick service from the lazy no good cops. You should call 911 and say there’s a black guy being attacked by a white guy. I garantee the cops will be there in seconds.
This is pathetic and ridiculous. It seems like NY is run by a bunch of elementary kids. Its emabrassing. Its horrible and terrifying that we are in this situation!
We have to do something!!!!
hate crimes always occur before nine pm.
no need for patrols past that time
said no one ever
except the nypd
Didn’t these guys get the moronic cop’s name & badge#? They are the laziest, most inept idiots NYPD could hire. G-d help us. TIME FOR US TO GET GUNS & protect ourselves from these intruders.
How dare you call the cops away from their donuts and coffee!! What a chutzpah!!!!!!!! what audacity!!!! and as for no patrols past Albany? Well what do you expect from a bunch of cowards?
this is why the city is the way it is!!!!!
