With 90 percent of Fort Myers, Florida losing power during Hurricane Ian, Chabad Lubavitch of Southwest Florida in Fort Myers has been offering shelter to many.
During Shacharis prayers on Thursday, Rabbi Yitzchok Minkowicz read the Torah with community members by the light of flashlights. Many local residents have been sheltering at the Chabad Center in the wake of the hurricane currently battering Southwest Florida.
At 5:45 PM on Wednesday, Rabbi Minkowicz released a video update to the public.
“The wind is coming in strong, the rain is coming non-stop,” he said. The Chabad Center has sustained a lot of damage due to the storm, he said, such as signs coming down and tiles which have fallen, as well as broken fences.
The most distressing aspect is the fact that many of his neighbors are trapped in dangerous flooding, and cannot leave, Rabbi Minkowicz said.
“Many people are coming to stay at the Chabad Center because the elevation is pretty good,” he said.
“We hope it will be a ‘storm of good news!’ Rabbi Minkowicz said, remaining upbeat despite the torrential rains.
