On the second night of Chanukah, Yeshivah Bais Menachem illuminated downtown Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, with a special public menorah lighting.
The public menorah lighting and party were arranged in large part by students and shluchim of Bais Menachem, building a beautiful new 12 foot menorah, playing music and providing energy for all in attendance.
The event was attended by State Representative Eddie D. Pashinski, as well as local dignitaries and many members of the Jewish community, with coverage by local newspapers and TV stations.
A delicious assortment of doughnuts, hot latkes and drinks were enjoyed by all present.
Rabbinical student Shalom Bergovoy emceed and spoke to the crowd about the significance of lighting the menorah in public. Rabbi Tzvi Perlman was called on to deliver a dvar Torah to the crowd.
Rep. Pashinski emphasized the importance of right against might as exemplified by the story of Chanukah and then lit the shamash while prominent local attorney Richard Goldberg, a friend of the yeshiva, lit the menorah candles. Everyone joined in dancing and singing with live music, which went on for an hour following the lighting.
Special thanks to Rabbi Z. Perlman, Rabbi Pinny Levitin, Shalom Bergovoy, and Michoel Weiss for successfully producing the event.
