He knows the big themes (‘theology’, ‘philosophy’, ‘written in books’) that apply across the board, including ‘making G-d at home in the lowest levels’. But within that larger context, he wants to know his individual, particularized, personalized mission / calling / purpose.

He knows what the general mission is. He wants to know what his specific mission is. I remember watching an interview with Rabbi Yakabovitch where he said tat by a farbrengen in Paris, when the Rebbe went to pick up his mother, the Rebbe went around the room and told each individual there specific mission in this world.

I like the color coordination.
On a serious note, that question is made easier when you read the Rebbes letters.

BS”D why the Kol Yochel could not accomplish His goals without the suffering of Klal Israel

he’s a great mind and i am a fan but chassidus tells us clearly
laasos lo yisborech dira betachtonim
and on a personal level each one to refine his middos, nefesh habehamis , iskafya etc thereby uncovering revealing elokus.
