The great rabbinic leader, Rabbi Peretz Chein, was an ardent chasid of the Tzemach Tzedek. He would wake up at 3:00 a.m., study Talmud and Jewish law for four hours, and from 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., he would study Chasidus. The following four hours were spent in prayer.
Once, Rabbi Chein went with Rabbi Shmuel, the Rebbe’s son, on a mission. When it was time for prayers, Rabbi Shmuel told him to keep his prayers short, as they wanted to make haste to their destination. Rabbi Chein agreed, but then prayed for his usual four hours.
When he finished, Shmuel asked him about their agreement.
Rabbi Chein responded, “If you would have commanded me not to pray, I would have listened, since you are the Rebbe’s son. However, once you told me to pray, I could not get myself to stop.”
