The Melody that Changed President Shazar’s Destiny
Dozens of communities the world over and many thousands of people are now joining the largest virtual Gimmel Tamuz farbrengen, with world class orator Rabbi YY Jacobson and diverse video clips of the Rebbe.
“Anchored in the Past to Transform the Future,” is the title of this global fabrengen, which will focus on the wisdom and inspiration of the Rebbe for our lives today. Many beautiful stories about the Rebbe will be told.
Among the stories is the one about the Chabad melody which changed the
destiny of one of leading Zioniat leaders of last generation.
Farbrengen begins at 8:00 PM EST. A video and mp3 will be available later for download.
Program of the evening:
Talk 1:
It is a glaring contradiction. The Torah describes in detail where
Moses was buried, yet it concludes that no man knows his burial
place!? The answer is that it is we who have to decide whether Moses
was buried or his vision and spirit still lives within us.
Video: The paradox of a Yartzeit—grief for the passing of a loved one
and joy for the gifts they imparted to us.
Talk 2:
Jewish identity in a multicultural society is one of the great
dilemmas of our generation. Are we Universalists or Particularists?
Should we attempt to integrate into the larger human community or
should we remain distinct? An enigmatic Talmudic discussion about the
kosher signs of fish—scales and fins—captures the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s
unique perspective on this question. It is precisely through Jewish
particularism that we can become a true “light unto the nations.”
Video: The story of a wealthy Jew, an owner of a yacht, who as a
result of a simple question from his ship captain, he has an impact
beyond his imagination.
Video: The Hadassah women’s organization ought to glean a lesson from
the first Hadassah, Queen Esther, and from how she dealt with the
non-Jewish world.
Talk 3:
To be anchored in the self is one of the greatest gifts in life. The
deeper you are rooted in your own truth, the broader and wider your
impact. The dramatic story about the third President of Israel, Zalman
Shazar, and the tradition about a particular melody his Chassidic
grandfather shared with him. This deeply impacted the life and destiny
of this Socialist Zionist poet.
Talk 4:
Two stories:
1. The mysterious decision of the Lubavitcher Rebbe not to address his
disciples on two of the most auspicious days on the Chabad Chassidic
calendar, 9-10 Kislev. It turned out that a bar-mitzvah of an African
American convert was taking place during those days.
2. Suddenly, the Rebbe changed his custom and did not place his hand
on his forehead during the prayers. It turned out that in the room was
present a man whose facial features were difficult to look at.
Emulating the Rebbe’s example giving respect and dignity to each
person.
