An Orthodox Jewish man who left $5,000 worth of jewelry in an Uber car couldn’t report the incident for three days because it happened just before sundown on Passover.
The man left the jewelry in the car on April 3 and waited until April 6, after the holy day, to report the incident to the police, according to the New York Post.
By that time, the driver had sold all of the jewelry to a pawn shop.
The driver, 51-year-old Juan Morales, 51, was charged with grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.
An Uber spokesman said Morales was removed from service.
“Immediately upon learning what happened, the driver was removed from the platform,” said Lane Kasselman, Uber head of communications for North America.
“This is an unfortunate incident and we are gratified that the authorities were able to quickly apprehend the suspect. We stand ready to assist them in any investigation.”
Firing the driver is cruel…so who sees his/her own faults? (The owners justify, arrogantly, their own sin…so, perhaps does the driver.) Flogging &/or payback should be done with interest and a warning. Perhaps he was a very good and courteous driver for many years, and a family man — he was tempted…so where ‘Adom ve Chava,’ etc. Now his family suffers financially and if he’s imprisoned any children he might have will suffer because (perhaps) a great dad is away? He might be a better father than the cab owners…people aren’t simple…He should be warned that he probably will be… Read more »
I hope that UBER is responsible for this loss to the couple, please keep us posted on that. It will make a difference to those of us using car services.
You just caused “UBER” to close it’s doors 😃
of jewelry in a uber!
Lesson learned
The couple should definitely be reimbursed – victims of theft should always be reimbursed .
So will I!
Can’t the victims bring the Police to prove the jewelry was stolen from them, and then the shop has to give them back their jewelry?
I’m sure the Pawn Shop must have insurance to cover loss situations like this.
I take Ubber a lot. If Ubber dont give the money back to the couple I will stop traveling with them.
In most states pawn shops are required under very strict law to register in detail all their purchased items with the police dept. including a copy of real Valid I.D. of the seller, every item and seller is checked and verified through the local & national police database, in order to prevent stolen goods,
police show up randomly at pawn shops to check if items have been registered,
Juan Morales does not know the One who decides our morals! We need to spread the Sheva Mitzvos!
If he waited for Yom Tov to be over to tell the police, I’m sure he’ll get the money/jewelry back.
how did the police find out he sold it to the pawn shop? i’m interested
BS”D
I hope Uber reimburses the couple bc the driver had already hocked the mdse. at a pawn shop
