A new campaign calling on women and girls to dress modestly will be launching today in Crown Heights. Posters will be hung up on the streets and in shuls to create awareness of the the Tznius issue.
COLlive has learned that the $1,700 campaign is privately funded. Its initiators asked not to be identified, but said they have full approval from the N’shei Chabad organization.
“We had to do it on our own, otherwise it would have never been done,” one of the female organizers explained in a phone conversation.
Titled “Not just a good idea – IT’S THE LAW!,” the slogan refers to the laws of modesty in the Torah and refers residents to “Kvuda bas Melech,” a book by Rabbi Moshe Weiner.
The organizers quote Rabbi Shneor Zalman Dworkin OBM, on the topic: “There exists a serious breakdown in observance of standards of modesty in women’s dress as specified by the Torah, due largely to ignorance. But even those aware of the Halachic perspective are often confused as to which aspects are the absolute requirements of the law, which are based on minhag and which are hiddur; this frequently results in confusion as to the correct practice.”
do you seriously think ppl. don’t know the halachas???? y don’t u spend this money on something constructive!
i think this poster is very good!
All parents living in this neighborhood need our schools. They want their kids in our schools. If the schools would make the parents sign a contract regarding their own behavior and act upon seeing a parent disobey the required tzinus standard it would have an effect. No parent would risk having their child expelled from school because they, the parent did not behave properly. The only way we can rectify the problem is by having the schools cooperate. It has woked in other neighborhoods and it can work here, too. But the schools administratoirs have to consistent and work together. I… Read more »
$1,700 for this? Shouldnt of wasted money
I agree with you, it is the husband’s fault and it almost looks like they enjoy it when these women get attention from other men. Be careful what you wish for!! A smart husband will compliment his wife when she is dressed eidel and tznius.
What is wrong with all you people. Stop judging others and look at yourself. Dont judge people by what they look like on the outside.
Those skimpy, short denim skirts are horrible! Walk on Kingston any day and every single girl is wearing one, almost like a uniform. Come on!
How will this cahange anything??!!
Kol Hakavod for taking a stand
This poster is pathetic
These posters wont help. the ones who really care about this issue dress the right way already. I dont think anyone who doesnt will even pay attention.
at least someone is trying to DO something, unlike others who just sit around and complain about the situation….
what will be?
I for one am really surprised at all the negativity from these comments. Whatever happened to being positive and seeing the good in people? That’s the only way to reach them….
Why on earth should we treat this problem like wa are out of town????? That is rediculous! The women here know better!!! they have the proper chinuch and were taught how to dress. its a completly different situation!!!
The problem in our community is that all the schools choose to accept kids from families where the parents do not abide by the laws of tznius. We need rules like in other neighhorhoods, that if a mother of a child is seen improperly dressed, the child CANNOT BE IN SCHOOL.
that is the only way. there has to be pressure from the community that we as a whole do not accept it.
I don’t think this “loud” poster encourages women or girls to be tznius. Seeing that people have mashpiim and are in contact with them may help a lot more. Seeing that people go to shiurim (not lectures about tznius,, but chassidus lectures about G-d, may help more.Being friendly with Jews instead of looking down on how people are dressed may help more.Also. siyata dishmaya.
If the husband would not encourage it IT WOULD NOT HAPPEN
We should treat this problem just like we would out of town
kiruv and kindness
I really dont think a poster campaign will be enough to make the kind of change that is needed in our community now. we are in a real crisis with women walking around completley not tznius. How will this help??? Its not ignorance – they all know its wrong. But they do it anyways, in complete unabashed disregard for halacha and what the Rebbe would want. its an embarrasment!
The vast majority of girls who are dressed ‘immodestly’ in crown heights are very aware of the laws of tznius – they have usually grown up lubuvitch homes and gone to lubuvitch schools. So while it is very benevolent of you to blame the “serious breakdown in observance of standards of modesty…to ignorance”, it is doubtful.
That many girls simply do not care is much more likely. That’s often the result of overly controlling parents and teachers who leave kids with a bitter taste towards halacha in general.
how do I ge a poster up in my shul? who do I contact?
And it’s not just any law – it’s the essence of a Bas Yisroel. Many girls and women view Tznius the same way they view Chitas , Rambam and Mivtzoim – because they are encouraged to learn Chitas and Rambam with more enthusiasm then they are taught to be Tzniusdig. Tznius has to be our number one priority.
