Tri-State Hit With Snow, Ice

The Department of Sanitation is unable to service any alleyways due to icy conditions. It is too dangerous for the workers to go into alleyways under these conditions. If you would like pick up service, please bring your garbage to the end of the alleyways for pick up.

A winter storm is dumping snow and ice across the Tri-State area Monday, causing some dangerous driving conditions.

A winter storm warning is in effect until 6 p.m. for New York City as well as the lower Hudson Valley, parts of Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut.

A winter storm watch was issued for southern Nassau and eastern and southwest Suffolk.

Accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are forecast for Monday in the city and slightly more in the northern suburbs.

The big factor in the storm is the ice and freezing rain that is expected to follow the bulk of the snow, causing dangerous conditions for the morning commute.
In New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio urged commuters to avoid the roads Monday and use mass transit instead. He said the biggest threat is up to a quarter inch of ice on roads.

“We’d want people to be very, very cautious,” he said Sunday.
Alternate side parking regulations have been suspended Monday, but public schools in the city will be open.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo also urged New Yorkers to be prepared and cautious.

“I am urging all New Yorkers to exercise caution when traveling,” Cuomo said in a statement. “State agencies are ready and prepared to respond to worsening weather conditions, but I encourage all New Yorkers to plan ahead for delays and remain safe throughout the storm.”

In Westchester, the National Weather Service predicts more snow, freezing rain and sleet all day.

Early commuters on Monday inched along treacherous, snowy highways.
In New Jersey, the northern counties are getting snow, while it’s ice and sleet that’s slowing traffic in the central parts of the state.

Speed restrictions are in effect on some of the major highways.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said service on New York City subways, the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North are operating on a regular weekday schedule, but some weather-related delays are being reported.
The MTA says it has snow and ice-fighting equipment across its network and extra crews are keeping platforms clear of snow and ice.

It also has a fleet of snow-clearing equipment on its bridges and tunnels and 9,800 tons of de-icing material.

NJ TRANSIT will be cross-honoring tickets throughout the system.
The Port Authority said it is monitoring the storm and is prepared to deploy extra personnel to all of its facilities, which include airports, bridges, tunnels and PATH.

Travelers should check with their airlines because there are delays and cancellations at Newark Liberty International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy Airport.
