Hurricane Irene’s cost to insurers may have fallen to an estimated $3 billion in the U.S. as the storm weakened on its path toward New England, according to Kinetic Analysis Corp., a firm that predicts the effects of disasters.
An earlier estimate was for insured losses of as much as $14 billion.
New York City was spared severe damage, and the worst of the storm had passed as of about 10 a.m. local time Sunday.
Across the state, 370,000 people were without power as of 10:30 a.m., Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office said.
In Crown Heights, which was not under any emergency alert, strong winds have caused large logs and branches of trees to fall on cars, streets and porches.
One such damage occured in the entrance and front yard of Avrohom and Miriam Gopin’s home on Montgomery Street.
A tree fell on his brick and metal gate at around 1:00 AM on Sunday as rain came gushing down and thunder was heard throughout the neighborhood.
With 10 children and more grandchildren, Avrohom said he was thankful to Hashem that no one got hurt. A family member walked through the entrance a short while earlier.
“It was b’chesed u’brachamim,” he said. “Baruch Hashem, no one was hurt.”
Notifying the authorities about the fall proved to be a tedious and draining process.
“We called 311 who sent us to 911 who sent us back to 311, over and over,” one family member told COLlive.com.
“It was like after 9/11 when the agencies were not sharing information. Each said it was the other’s responsibility. We ended up putting a representative of 311 and 911 on a conference call which turned into a heated argument, so I hung up.
New York City Department of Parks & Recreation ended up taking responsibility.
Neighbors told COLlive.com they have been asking the city to remove the dead tree whose branches began to shrivel.
“But they said it was too expensive to cut down,” one noted. “Now they have no choice – and not to mention the harm it could have caused.”
dw there are plenty of other trees you can hug and make friends with
if it posed a personal danger and you didn’t get prompt response from the government, why didn’t you just hire someone to cut it down?
I used to hug the tree every day, but now it’s gone and i lost a good friend who never posted nasty comments on the internet.
ha ha. yep. your wind can knock down trees!
maybe he was looking for the chopped liver under the tree!
man plans god luaghs
Go AD, show that tree who is boss!
i hope noone got hurt! quite amazing wwhat a wind can cause!!
how did you write this comment then?
The trees do a lot of good. Just because a tree is getting old isn’t necessarily a good reason to cut it down. It was the wind’s fault, not the tree’s. And anyway, people cause a lot more harm to trees than trees do to people, and you don’t see any trees posting negative articles about people online.
AG – did you find any buried treasure under that tree?
hey what am i – chopped liver? i was there too and there’s no mention of my name!!
Did you see the tree that fell right in front of Oholei Torah? Sometime you have to listen to the yodei dovor and not be a chochom and rely on nisim.
but u should check out south fallsberg, especially pleasant valley!!!!!
just devastating!!
..
I just wanted to commend the photographer/s for an excellent job. Not only have you portrayed the effects of the storm, but artistically, you have some really beautiful shots here. Mah Rabu Maasecha Hashem. We see the power and beauty of Hashem in all that He created.

ok we just got the tail compared to ur mess!
I would think that this is something that our community council should do, is to intervene and try to get the city to notice the situation? Isnt that a reasonable request from a community member to his community council??
mazalm tov for the new einikel!
how long till we get our Internet back?? The cable is down (as in: down under a tree)
B.H. you were not harmed, good to see you!

AG looking good! Missing all the action here. BH there’s what to smile about 🙂

Even now; the trees are blowing and being that the roots are saturated, we should be very careful
