Those who lived through those times no doubt remember the political changes of the early 1990s that the Rebbe pointed to as signs of the world getting closer to Moshiach. What fewer people remember or are aware of is that the Rebbe also spoke about changes in women’s fashion of the time and identified it as a symptom of the world becoming more ready for redemption.
For those who do not remember, the early 90s saw modest 50s-inspired dress paired with wide belts and sometimes padded shoulders as the conservative fashion look. High round necklines, long sleeves, pleated skirt waists and a midi to almost ankle length became the style. (See picture.)
In talks on 17 and 20 Tishrei, 5751, the Rebbe pointed out how these changes came specifically from the non-Jewish world and explained that Jewish women and girls should feel encouraged and supported by these developments.


Affordable clothing matters!
It’s really made a comeback in recent years. 10 years ago I could never find a dress that covered my knees,. Now midi is a thing!! I feel such a strong parallel of 91-92 and these past two years. We’re living the time of redemption!
Does it concern anyone that all this modestly talk is just surrounding the women?

A woman/girl will look at the other woman and the girl looks at the mothers etc. Not because a rabbi/ Ruv said even if you if you show her a halucha and a sicha etc. and the girl/Woman understands. etc. Simply she Sees the rabbi’s wife. a respectable lady wearing the same Clothing same height skirt etc. and says to herself “if she is a chushva lady and can dress like that, I can dress like this” First the men that talk about tznius should look at there wives and then and find a way to get them to dress… Read more »
