By Rabbi Shmuley Boteach for COLlive.com
Spending Sukkos with my family in Crown Heights reminded me how there is no place on earth quite like it. No place is as alive. No place is as hospitable. What other community is there which every year opens its doors to, and fully absorbs, thousands of visitors – for an entire month!
It has been 21 years since I spent Simchas Torah in Crown Heights. For 11 years I was in Oxford and for the next ten I had responsibilities in various other communities. But this year I promised my family we would be at the Lubavitch hub.
It did not disappoint. If Crown Heights during Tishrei took the Ringling Brothers Circus to court to claim copyright for the moniker ‘Greatest Show on Earth’ it would win hands down.
On Hoshana Rabbah, as I watched thousands of people dance in the streets for the sixth night running without tiring, awed by the experience I asked myself how it was possible? Where did the energy come from? What the source of the exuberance? How on earth could any group of people be so utterly alive?
My friend Michael Steinhardt, the legendary philanthropist and founder of Birthright Israel, who stood alongside me that night watching the dancing, commented on the same. A world authority on the state of Jewry, he could not help but be overwhelmed by the electricity that filled the streets.
And yet, a refrain that I heard repeatedly over my time in Crown Heights surprised me. As I discussed the state of Lubavitch, many living in the community said to me, “Don’t judge Lubavitch by Crown Heights. Only the ziburis (loosely translated as the leftovers) of Lubavitch are here. The best went on Shlichus and left this place.” I am not exaggerating if I tell you that tens of people shared this strange sentiment.
Surrounded by such incredible people who set the standard for openness and human warmth, I wondered where such destructive self-loathing came from. Did all Lubavitchers feel that if they didn’t officially go on Shlichus they were second class? Was it right to live with such irrational self-denigration when, in truth, you were some of the most virtuous and beautiful people on earth?
So finally, on the last day of Yom Tov, when someone told me yet again that the best of Lubavitch had left Crown Heights and only the hangers-on remained, I decided I had to respond forcefully.
“Listen to me, please,” I told an elderly Chassid who stopped me to tell me that his son is a Shliach in Russia. “I got close to Lubavitch from about the age of nine. And I did so because after I went to Chabad camp they arranged for me to start coming to Crown Heights for Sukkos, Yud Tes Kislev, and Yud Shvat. I would arrive from Miami late at night with other kids and we would march into the homes of perfect strangers in Crown Heights. Still, the hostess would wake up, make us all dinner, give us all clean sheets, and open her home to us for a week at at time, even though she already had ten kids.
“Many of these families we stayed at were dirt poor. But they treated us like kings. And this happened year after year. And after a while I told myself that Lubavitchers are the nicest people in the whole world. And that’s what cemented my attachment to Lubavitch. I thought to myself that if Lubavitch could create people who were this hospitable and kind then there had to be something to the way of life. So let’s please get out of the destructive mindset that only the chaff of Lubavitch stuck it out in Crown Heights. Crown Heights represents the best of Lubavitch.”
And since I was a boy things have just gotten better. The Shule we davened at, Ohel Nassan, was quite simply the most festive Synagogue I have ever attended. My children were blown away by the exuberance and forced me, time and again, to daven every tefilla there because of its unparalleled joy. My dear friend Rabbi Chaim Miller, renowned in Chabad as the brilliant young scholar who produced the Gutnick Chumash, welcomed my entire family into his home, as he has for so many Shabbosim, even though we are a small invading army. And the Shomrim assisted me with my children when one nearly got lost in the huge throng.
I remain grateful to them all. This beautiful Yom Tov reinforced to me that although I grew up in Florida just a few hours from Disney World, Crown Heights is the real magic kingdom.
To be sure, to be a Shliach of the Rebbe is one of Judaism’s highest honors and I will always consider the Shlichus I did in Sydney, Australia, as a student, followed by my 11 years at Oxford, as some of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The Rebbe’s Shluchim are heroes of the Jewish nation. But every global movement requires a hub. And Crown Heights is the vibrant, pulsating, heart of Lubavitch.
It would be nice if its residents saw it in that light and we no longer heard irrational self-denigration that makes anyone who didn’t go on Shlichus feel like they are second best. The simple fact is that there are people and places whom businessmen and professionals can reach that someone with the official title of Shliach cannot. And then there is the simple fact that Crown Heights is the warm and inviting home which Shluchim can always use to send those who are drawing closer to Judaism to see a vibrant and inviting Jewish community in all its glory.
Now more than ever the Rebbe’s vision that every person is a Shliach is being manifest. Everyone is needed and noone is second class.

As the Rebbeh says
Btw it would be nice to have an online YouTube shiur in addition to a old fassion chaveusa
Please use your considerable gifts from Hashem Yisborach To help analize the Rebbe’s shichos nun alef nun beis, It’s about time someone with distilling skills and spent the time to make them accessible and userfriendly for those in lubavitch who are stuck behind the language and knowledge barrier Remember, At the end of the day, All of chasidim would accept the Rebbe’s own words as conclussive! What is lacking is making those sichose systematically accessible to those of us who don’t have a yeshiva background Bringing Torah to the rest of the world is great But charity begins at home… Read more »

Why such a over-enthusiastic respose to some positive reaction?
If ch.ers need so much approval… Start speaking up more in diffense of your communities public image
Agree with the mrssage of this article
I’ll gladly accept flattery any day:)
As long as it’s true! Who cares if he employed over the edge publicity stunts
The main question is what is the payoff of being world famus?
Simple…
Free acess to millions of people (1man = millions)
Judging from the content in most of his 20 books

Actually his first couple of books are completely sichos of the rebbeh rephrased into fancy English
It’s not his own toirois at all
At least his writtings out of oxford days
I’ve followed rabbi shmuley since oxford, he’s alwAys made clear he does revere the chabasker rebbe though he doesn’t pretend to speak in the name of the “rebbeh”
I totally agree with you! We live and learn
The man is amaizing thanks to Harav boteach
Always admired chabad
Never missed a single simchas beis in crown heights one of a. Kind

So much positivity on this site regardles of the attempts by many in the “establishment” trying to put him down as against all lubavitchers
As a long time friend of shmuly since Sydney I’m glad to see the achdus and brotherly love for a fellow (x) shliach
You ain’t no shaliach
Which shliach would berate class warfare
And in the same sentance generalize all of c.h. As asinine etc
Hypocracy!!
I’m really starting to think that something *is* wrong with Crown Heightsers. I am on shlichus and never once heard the concept of “farmers” until listening to people from CH. This is my job, and I try to approach it with as much dedication as anyone else should do with their own jobs. To turn this into a class system is asinine, and it seems like some people have an inferiority complex for absolutely no reason. We are all human and Jewish and therefore deserving of everyone else’s respect, although it would help if we earned it.
Amaizing!

i must say, i was reading the article waiting for the negativity to come, but as i read along, I saw none, I guess he has a reputation for bashing, so I assumed it was just another one. but, i think i have more comments on the comments than the article:) 1)Not all shluchim think of people not on shlichus as ‘farmers’ so please don’t generalize. 2) Crown heights warmth and openness is legendary, and very much appreciated!! 3) I have issues with this guy, he’s a sensationalist, simply out for fame. Greatly written
Thankyou Rabbi
We can all learn from this how to choose to notice the good and virtue in ourfellow man
You can tell from his article very clearly that he has still not gotten over the fact that he was kicked off shlichus, it still bothers him and hes expressing it very so slightly in teh article.
If you dont beleive me then print the article and read it again and youll see. Trust me!!!
I don’t live in c.h. Though this is the kind of attetude chabad needs and always stood for- looking at the world with the “right” eye. Seeing the blessings and yofi in fellow Jews and the world
Thankyou Rabbi Boteach and all the generiuse homes in c.h. For living chasidus in action

Btw I don’t think the complainers will suceed in keeping the warmth and brotherhood crownheights is known for
Sorry elite you can’t drive a wedge for your ax with a former shliach
You are advertising your pathetic hatred and imaturity to the world!
Even though you are anonymouse we all know who you are bc vast majority of chabad actually live by the Baal shems teachings rather than your yochus hallow prestiege

I like shmuley from the heart
The important thing is to not hang on to your bitterness
He should be aplouded for never attacking the rebbe or the chasidim
He always exposed the takers and frauds not ligitimate chabad

CH is a gettho. People are so worried about what their neighbors will SAY OR THINK that they would pass over a great bocher and pick a bum and a looser from a “better” family.
Fame over actual accomplishments.
That only makes sense in CH.
But it’s true, CH residents do open their hearts and tables to so many guests. G-d bless them and their beautiful gettho.
Nice of collive for puublishing uplifting stuff
Collive well done
Raised by two hardworking shluchim, and teaching in c.h the furtile farm
Nice and positive for a blog online …and Jewish too
the alwase putting CH down hurts the Shluchim!
i personally used to alwase donate as much as i could, but after bieng called a “Farmer” and told “let the Farmers be milked” it sadly got hard to give to a group that is always stepping on me.
i’m sure there are others that feel the same.
I go to CH every year for Simchas Torah
I always thaught that CH is 770 , but most ppl I saw in 770 are not from CH! What pourcent from Chs go to 770?
And yes, after all the problems from the past, with this vaad, the old vaad, this Rabbi , the other Rabbi, this cherem, the other cherem, this moiser , the other moiser,I,unfortunately started to believe what ppl were telling me, regarding the “farmers 2nd class, etc”
But , I realized that I do not know absolutely nothing about CH, and, of course there are very nice ppl
How many times does Shmuly say I?
One needs not to travel to distant destinations to be a Shliach of the Rebbe. One can & DOES live in Crown heights and has the ability and responsibility to be a full fledged Shliach of the Rebbe.
I commend r.shmuley for the article. I was too in ch, and started having many negative thoughts after I walked in and out of 770 a few moments later in disgust. I really need to look at the whole picture which this op-ed has helped in ways the author has no idea. Yup,it it’s not that rosy but a heck of alot better then being in a zillion other places. Fine, so he had issues with whomever in Oxford for this or that….bla bla bla… evevryone we know from the rabbonim to askanim to the rebbe’s secretariat group has issues… Read more »

A comment about the Gutnick Chumash – as someone who uses it in my Chabad House – people from many walks of life love it, and gain a tremendous amount from it. It is done well – and has much “Tochen” in it – presented in a way that the reader can learn much Chassidus! I have one woman who comes from a very “Litvishe” background – and if you hand her another Chumash – she request specifically the Gutnick Chumash – and makes it a point to show it to the newcomers that come! Thank you to all those… Read more »
but that still does not explain how chasidim can seat at home when the rebbe told ppl and cried that they should go o shlichus and that’s what’s needed today?
how can you remain on carroll or union when jews all over need you?!
Talented writer to capture solo much in such a short piece
THank you, Reb Boteach for a beautiful article!
I’ve said it before, and I will say it again on this forum – why so much bitterness and I’m afraid to say it – hatred (or at least bitter anger). Can’t we all be a bit kinder and nicer and better to each other – and make this world a world filled with goodness and kindness = Moshiach NOW!!
Thank you all for “listening” and please take these words to heart – speak kinder, more gently, words are very powerful!
Very well written

I don’t always agree with u or anyone for that matter
But I’ve always respected u for maintaining a close warm relationship with chabad chasidim, even as a small number of bulies tried vilifying u
Thanks for the courage to be positive in a spirit of sheves achim ham yocad
As others have posted already, pls ignore the few bitter ones with a interest to cause distance for their own vedeta
Chazak and thanks for giving words to a unpopular posittion
The Gutnick Chumash is known for its glaring inaccuracies and disappointing shortcomings in its elucidations of the Rebbe’s Sichos.
It’s just a shame most people don’t know that.
Yom Kippur is behind us, but here is a quick cheshbon nefesh: What are we meant to expect from a chosid whose inspiration is a rabbi who deserted shlichus by his own choice, led a smear campaign against Lubavitch UK, meddled with halacha and modesty issues and clearly is all about the PR (“Jackson Tapes”)?! How can we trust the Gutnick Chumash – a well invested work – if its author R’ Chaim Miller is a mushpa of Shmuly Boteach?! Don’t you think one the deals with the rebbe’s teaching out to be inspiried by someone more ‘chasidic’?! Will chabad… Read more »
Call those in crown heights farmers- but where do you think everyone gets their chayus from? Who do you think is mechanech kids in yeshiva and schools? Farmers?!?!
I thought that especially as shluchim we do that which the Rebbe instructed us to do. Where and when, pray tell can anyone tell me, that the Rebbe called any Jew a farmer? When did the Rebbe ever call Jews in Crown Heights farmers? When did the Rebbe ever call a Jew any name, especially if it was not complimentry? Why do some, especially friends on shlichus feel threatened by others in CH? Why does anyone have to put another Jew down? It sure doesn’t upleft the person that puts another down? nice article but 39 i right
It was autumn, and the Indians on the remote reservation asked their new Chief if the winter was going to be cold or mild. Since he was a new Indian Chief in a modern society, he had never been taught the old secrets, and when he looked at the sky, he couldn’t tell what the weather was going to be. Nevertheless, to be on the safe side, he replied to his tribe that the winter was indeed going to be cold and that the members of the village should collect wood to be prepared. But also being a practical leader,… Read more »
Very nice article, thank you shmuly!
as a shlucha who has only been 2 CH 4 times in my life, i hav noticed this unbelivable warmth and energy described in the article. it’s true that from the standpoint of the shluchim, we come to CH to recharge and to appreciate even for a short while, what it would feel like to live in a lubavitcher enviroment. thank you to all the CH residents who have given me this tremendous opportunity.
when speaking to someone like him thats the response, please dont bash us in your next article, this is the ziburis etc.
its funny i wonder why he decided to write something nice about lubavitch in general -especially 770!
i always agreed with this concept and i always agreed with botech
The people of Crown Heights are the best, always have been and always will be, as the majority of the populace knows the problems and smutz, come from outsiders and the radical fringes. I wonder why he doesn’t mention 770 can it be because like many he doesn’t feel comfortable by the elements that over[run] it? The silent majority in Crown heights are good Lubavitchers, who love to pitch in with the Rebbes Shluchim and Anash during Tishrei and all year long. Can it be that he found the real Crown Heights in Ohel Nosson, is he like many who… Read more »
you know why this article is SOOOOOOOOO good because its positive. No one EVER wants to hear negative. Even when the Rebbe Rashab says ehoiv es habikoires we would rather be ostriches with our head in the sand.
So lets all hold hands together and sing a song of praise for the article of praise while wearing our helmets in preparation for the next knock over the head.
Shmuley Boteach gives an eloquent message – and nicks out before the analysis comes. 1) He has no problem with tzniyus issues. On the contrary, vedal. 2) Why did you daven in a shul that even as a CHt’s resident I don’t know where or which it is? Why were you not in Lubavitch ShebeLubavicht, CHT’s ShebeCHT’s – 770? 3) You said the community absorbed thousands (more than the local population) and then you ask where does the energy come from? 4) Were you at the Rebbe’s minyanim? Did you walk the shvil? Did you bench on the Rebbe’s esrog?… Read more »
Always in the closet re my admiration for your avoda making Judaism presentable to the outside

I am a Shliach who comes from Crown Heights. It is the best place on earth. BUT SHMUELY remember that for the last few months you have been trashing Chabad and so many that you met were probably running for cover and that was the best protection they could think of. Shluchim love Crown Heights and always come back there for a battery recharge.
After all that some (few but powerful) in lubavitch elite did to provoke and disgruntle this Man! Wooowww so many positive posts!!! Are we in a Chabad website???
It’s very great! Yasher Koach.
Moshiach NOW!
Crown Heights is a wonderful community. I have witnessed this time and time again in a number of ways. I think because they are not on Shlichs for whatever reason the people living there search for opportunities (like the ones you mention and many other that don’t get the all the attention) to take part in the Rebbes Shilchs in on way or another. We are all in this together and we all contribute our unique part in giving the Rebbe nachs.
Even when it hurts!
Shmuly, thanks for writing on first-hand experiance rather than parroting what ppl (with negetivity in their heart) say from outside
without the “farmers” there would be LESS money for shluchim just as without the the cook farmer farming his feild there would be no food for the prominent people or the king to eat , but are you chas vesholom going to compare the greatness of the prominent people or the king to the farmers?
On behalf of my wife, I want to thank you, for heralding her and countless others like her, selfless dedication and untiring work, welcoming strangers into our home over the Tishrei holiday period.
They are our unsung heroes and the Rebbe’s frontline!
Crown Hts is a wonderful community. It is always impressive to see the Gmilas Chessed and the Torah Learning there. If it only the streets were not so dirty! With a little effort, it could look like Park Slope.
this article is a beautiful article to all the “know it alls” that say “Simchas Bais Hasoavah and Simchas Torah in CH is a Major Chilul Lubavitch” here you see Shmuly and his friend Michael Steinhardt (who is quote “a the legendary philanthropist and founder of Birthright Israel” “A world authority on the state Jewry”,) said that not only was it not a Chilul Hashmem but rather “he could not help but be overwhelmed by the electricity that filled the streets” = major Kiddush Lubavitch
We are the farmers that plow the field and prepare the world for Moshiach with our holy work, Thank you Shmuly, your a true shliach
It does not matter how many times this website and others choose to print articles and “op-eds” from Shmuley Boteach in order to rehab himself into Lubavitch. Nor does it matter how many times he chooses to compliment or usually insult various portions of Lubavitch. Until he does some introspection and apologizes to the Rebbe and to Lubavitch as publicly as he denigrates us should he be given any sort of forum and respect.
what i dont get this farmer talk? can someone fill me in? i thought the article was very carefully written not to hurt anyones feelings and really touching!
if the rebbe said kan tzivah es hashem habarach then thats the way it is. even if i am on shlichus over 20 years i miss crown hights evry yom tov and every simchas torah. i agree with #15 there is no them and us we are all one mishpacha and if you call one of your family farmers then we are all farmers. cnat waitt to be in Crown Hights hopefuly with the coming of moshiach or at the next shluchim convention.
very nice article… let him post it on the non chabad websites where he writes negativity about about Chabad…..
On shlichus & proud son of a farmer, I went on shlichus myself, and people come to my parents all the time asking them for $$$. And my father gives with an open heart. when they need his money he’s kosher and when they finally get the check and leave all they do is bad mouth and curse out “farmers, peasants etc.” this disgusting prestige in lubavitch is not what the Rebbe taught us. I think your point about Crown Heights feeling second class is correct and it should not be that way, however I would say it differently. Our dear Rebbe has taught us all how to give of ourselves to others and feel the pride and joy in doing so knowing that we are taking part in a great cause. Some of us Lubaviters express this idea by dedicating our life to Shlichs 24/7 away from the comforts of a Lubavitch community and everything that goes along with it (no simple task), and others give of themselves with the same great Chabad… Read more »

he knows he is a MACHRIV of Lubavitch and he wants in so he found an open door, the anash from Crown Heights who are the nicest People in the world not only do they let in guest from all over but they allow the meshichistin in so now Boteach is going to find a way in to Lubavitch
i guess when they need money to go out on shlichus
they come to the “farmers” to collect
maybe if the “farmers” didnt give they would look at us different
i am a proud “farmer” and when you come to my door to collect for your shlichus please tell me what you think
it is unfortunante that people are trying to make a “them” and “us” out of this
a proud “farmer”
i agree you 100% there is no place like crown hights even though i am on shlichus crown hights is the rebbe shchuna and will allways be like that. i know that people say that shluchim put down crown hight i dont belive it’s true WE LOVE CROWN HIGHTS it where we got all that we have and we still get all the koach and zecusim from Crown Hights
awesomely eloquent as usual shmully
Yishar Koach and may u contiuel to enjoy and be successful in UR SHLICHIUT– which is ckearty making big headwaves.
Whats with shmuly and farmers??
There’s Shmuly again – praising the farmers!
I miss Crown Heights! I said what Shmuley said for years but people will only listen when he says it. G-d only lets some go on Shlichus I’m happy he alows me. But many didn’t get the options I did.
kol hakavod!!!! good to hear some positivity!!! true ahavas yisroel!!! the baal shem tov taught us to always look at another jew with the “right” (positive) eye.

as someone from crown heights i have always got the brunt of hatred from my out of town friends. they would tell me I dont act speak or look like a crownheightser and that is something i “should be proud of”. I am proud to live in this community surrounded by beautiful people > Its all about your perspective and your wonderful article gave me a little more pride in my community. thank you for seeing the good in it.
