A major blizzard hit New York City and the surrounding areas on Sunday, and is expected to dump almost two feet of snow, snarling roads and cancelling hundreds of flights to LaGuardia, Newark and JFK Airports.
Mayor Bloomberg held a press conference Sunday afternoon updating New Yorkers on the city’s plan of action for the blizzard and advising them to stay off the roads.
“If you have to go out today, please leave the cars at home,” Bloomberg appealed, “take mass transit and be careful.”
Bloomberg said it might be advisable to wait a few extra hours before venturing out on the roads.
“I know it’s inconvenient, sometimes it can be expensive. But nothing is worth losing your life over this.”
The mayor outlined that the Department of Sanitation had 365 salt spreaders, 1,700 snow plows and over 180,000 tons of salt at their disposal in their battle against the winter mess.
A blizzard warning remains in effect until 6:00 pm Monday.

I love the 4 seasons here;
White, white winters.
Colourful gardens in springs.
Wonderful Summers. Comfortable Temperatures, outdoor cafes- gorgeous summer nights.
Awesome Autumns. Stunning foliage and colours, and then back to our white, white winters.
Pretty all around. Just an awesome city. Love it.
There is nothing more beautiful than a walk in Montreal after a fresh snow. Ah!!!!
the snow in my backyard was soooooooooo deep!!!!!! even though we were wearing tights, 3 pairs of socks, boots, sweater, coat, scarf and every other thing possible, we came back inside after 10 minutes shhivering and soakink!
Moved to southern New Mexico, great weather all year.
Driving through the Adirondacks on our way from NY to Montreal during a snowstorm, the roads although slow-going, were clean and manageable; as soon as we crossed the border into Canada the roads became an impassible nightmare. I lived in Montreal for several winters and there is nothing even remotely nice about the never ending cold and the constant ice and all its dangers. NY snowstorms are few and far enough apart that they are fun at first and are usually gone soon enough!
i love sno
if you look up hstroical storn in montreal .. very rare for them to get 2 feet in 12 hours..ever.. they get lots of succesive smaller storms .. very rare to get as much as quickly as we just got..
oh and how many roads are there in the whole city? we have far more in brooklyn alone compared to the whole city..
I’m very sorry but this “policy” from Oholei Torah that they are “always open” is totally retarded! Who made up this Shtus? R’ Mochoel Teitelbaum? It’s dangerous to walk in the streets – and YOU are responsible if anything happens to the kids..!!
#26 The weather in NYC and Montreal is very similar..its only a 7 hour difference by car , we are not in the arctic here people. Its 45 mins from the NY border. What number 4 is trying to say is that its funny how everything shuts down in the states when there is a big snowstorm ..she is basically calling you wusses…
but why do you take it personally shes not talking about you RELAX..
Montreal standard of living is superior to Crowne Heights in many ways…don’t diss.. deal with it =)
Closed through 5th grade, 6-8 finish at 12:30
the reason OT is open (& now I’m sure ULY too) is because the Rebbe told them never to close. So – even in much worse storms OT does not officially close. Apparently though if a kid can’t get there… they are not penalized & in worse storms no one comes other then 1 teacher “to keep school open” so 1) if u as a parent feel u need to protect ur child – do that but yes – kol hakavod that they listen to our Rebbe & keep school open. 2) that’s prob. y it says “are encouraged toattend”… Read more »
Great to see you Shimon having fun with the kids! Mendel & Tzvi are adorable!!!
in canada. though i dont like montreal, —the vast country is G-ds Masterpiece, and absolutely stunning when covered in untouched white
inch? try 2 feet
get a real job! the world don’t stop just cause the snow is “so pretty like omg”
whatabout darchay menachem and bnos menachem and others?
the garbage picture is sort of yucky
Even though Bais Rivkah has no school, I think you should go on account of your terrible spelling and lack of Ahavas Yisroel!!
Anybody know if they’re open?
new yorkers are just too cool for school
ive never seen anything like this it blows my mind
how does snow form? is it made of cotton balls? i heard that if u jump on a cloud its like a bunch of cotton balls and u bounce off
u can call bnosmenachem tomorrow after 7 2 find out if there is school
to those of us “the working class” who don’t rely on government benefits, have to go work so we can pay for your foodstamps and medicaid. so really sorry to you “miss relaxed” we have to go to work so u can relax at home!
One of the reasons most schools are closed during snow storms is because the roads are dangerous for driving and walking….. I feel that it’s irresponsible for the yeshivos to stay open during such a storm. I wonder if others share these thoughts?
Montreal (Mor-ai-al) Is well equipped….. its different………..the little sidewalk cleaners come out very quick….. & its the law we must have snowtires!!
let it snow let it snow ,,,tatadida!!!!!!
Call school in morn. to hear message about rest of school.
thoseee kiddies are too cute!
take a ruler and measure 20 inches, would u walk to work in that? the city doesnt clean the sidewalks for us, we have to do it ourselves — only when the snow stops — that will be tomorrow, so till we can shovel, there’s no way we will walk to work!
“Mesivta, Zal: Older talmidim are encouraged to attend school.”
u go girl!!!!!!!!! no school ahhh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
no school for bais rivkah this is sooooooooooo cool and awsome and to #13 noone cares if theres school for you guys ! jk no siriecly only u do no school!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Darchai Menachem???
hahahahahahahahahaha
i cant believe the little boys have school!
It’s not crown heights you know it all, it’s the entire tri state area, including a state of emergency in NJ. Is it still hilarious?
Montreal rocks!
Totally cool city.
Foreign language.
Beautiful mountain in middle of city.
Surrounded by stunning rivers.
45 min. to awesome ski hills in winter and gorgeous lakes in the summer.
Love that place – wish I could live there – but I live in Toronto which is one piece of flat landscape.
Vive le Quebec! Love you guys! Let it snow!
1-8 open
ok, in montreal its nothing. but as new yorkers, this snow is a lot for us!! so go back to montrel if u want more snow!!
I was in montreal for afue years and they only get 2 feet of snow once or twice a year. The only reason why montreal doesn’t shut down is because they have more plows etc. So pipe down from the kalte shtut.
Enjoy your snow, we don’t want it. If it was a contest you can win! There is a reason ppl don’t want to live so far north! lol, I wish we had no snw, but it is pretty now.
what about ohr menachem? Are they open or closed???????
you guys living in crown heights are pretty halarious!! all you need is a inch of snow and the whole city shuts down for the day!!!
does anyone have any idea what BM is doing??
school/no school… anthing special with HS?
anyone!?!?!?!?
What’s with you?
What is wrong with you that you can’t feel the pain of a people persecuted by the snow and french language?
You must throughly work on your Middos.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU!
For shame! For shame! For shame!
always check this site [like No.1 and 6…and me] also want to keep the snow.
4 the year 2010 this is not the biggest snow storm. If you remember the last week of Feb. 2010 was a really big storm. Everything was closed down. Don’t remember how many inches but it was really really really big. So let us not forget last Feb right b4 Purim a huge snow storm hit Bklyn that was the biggest so far there were other snow last Jan. however it wasn’t as big as Feb so I would say this is the 2nd biggest of the year being that we r @ the end of 2010. However 4 the… Read more »

On a Montrealer to put in a self righteous comment on EVERY snow article, how they are bigger and better than NY.
Get a life

Those are the cutest grandchildren in America. An anonymous bubby.
what about Bnos Menachem – closed, open…???
mendel and zvi!!!! love <3
i would love to have such a great bubby that knits the best and most beautiful hats in town
Kol hakavod that ot stays open, I wish the younger ones would have some sort of program as well….
great to see u guys!!! cuties!! ella and tzvi, u look like u are having a ball!!! miss u tonz!
without the snowplows people can’t get their cars out, cars skid, and there can be many accidents!
beth rivka also doesnt have school
i also feel that way. however u have 2 be considerate of others. some people must get places urgently and it is not safe even when it is plowed. but it is safer when it is plowed. last winter, i lived on a really busy street. there was dirty snow piled up on my front yard. it was horrible. baruch Hashem i moved. i think the snow is beautiful and i hate it when people walk on it. just thank Hashem for the beautiful things He makes 4 us.
ella and tzvi rock the best couple on earth
even a regular day of snow in montreal winter is worse than this!!!!! our snowstorm is 1 million times worse and yet everything works and nothing shuts down!!
go to sleep ch!
– a montrealer
What a great way to depict snow in Crown heights, a mountain – A mogul of Garbage Bags:)
very cute pics
why do they have to ruin the snow with salt and machines?? i love it!! can’t the world relax for a day or 2?? come on that is all we are asking lets just relax take it eeeeasy
ahh leave the snow please, im loving it
